My car would be just a Mustang without the IRS. It rocks. Amazingly different from the SRA on the street and the track. The steering wheel is there for more than turning onto the return road. Use it

Thats your opinion however MOST people dont road race their car. To each their own LONG LIVE THE SRA!

I have a hard time believing people are still defending and craving a stick axle. WTF is up with that? It may make sense if you only go in a straight line, are extremely cheap, only drag your car, or haul 5000lbs of potatoes around but if you want to turn then a well designed IRS will always be better. Always.

I'm curious if you guys that are living in the past want old front suspension as well, like solid front axles, or all of the vehicle weight on the upper ball joints like the first Mustangs? Would you guys be upset if Ford went to a real double A-arm front suspension and got rid of the cheap and crappy strut system?

Holy crap people, wake up!

....not only that, forgetting that the S197 hops like a bitch with its live axle. It's far from perfect. I've seen tons of Terminators in 10s on IRS, I think the real problem is that the people that don't like IRS can't drive.

Good thing thats only your opinion:poke: I think all the old people that want driveability should just buy a vette, and quit whining about how they like to take smooth turns off the surface street into McDonalds to their show n shines!

Griggs Racing Products /thread.. Seriously though everyone who is saying that a IRS is the ONLY thing that will handle is effing high.. Maybe for vipers, supra, vettes etc but the mustang IRS sucked.. Overheats on the track (road racing/autocross), broken halfshafts (Drag), Cracked diff cover (street/drag) wheel hop etc. Now can ford build a high quality IRS sure but the cost will be expensive and the buyer will pay for it.. even so a properly setup Live Axle will pretty much out handle any IRS street/opentrack/drag ect.. don't believe refer back to the link... oh and if you think the ride is soooo harsh just drive a properly setup live axle car, it drives better than stock and won't "bounce" around a corner on uneven pavement..

That is simply not true. Not unless a designer has found a way to defy geometry and vehicle dynamics.

Are you telling me that a solid rear axle will ride better than an independent rear suspension if both are properly designed?

Somebody had better let F1 and the LeMans racers know that they've been developing the wrong type of rear suspension for the last 40yrs.

Engineers are stupid anyway. Might as well go back to front and rear solid axles. It's just as good.

:D LMAO Hey, wait a minute those little caster wheels mean that thing can turn on a dime. 4-wheel steering... that's pretty tech.

+1

It's not hard to design a competent IRS that'll work well at a drag strip, road course, and on the street. Plenty of auto companies have managed to do it.

The IRS in the Cobra wasn't all it could be because it was put into a chassis that wasn't designed for it, and the engineers were limited by cost. A platform engineered to have an IRS from the beginning will be far superior to any solid axle Mustang in just about every way.

Some of you sound like you'd be happier if they brought back body-on-frame designs, leaf spring suspensions, and leaded gas. :smmon:

great post

We should do a poll of the age of people who like IRS. My bet would be 40+ for it and under 40 against!
