Among the top three passenger cars sold in California in the first quarter this year, Elon Musk’s Tesla Model 3 dropped from first place to third, behind the Toyota Camry and the Honda Civic, according to the California New Car Dealers Association’s first quarter auto outlook on Monday. Toyota was the top brand in California this quarter, notching a 9.3% increase in registrations, followed by Honda, which marked an 18.6% rise so far this year. Tesla registrations have dropped in California year to date, with a 7.8% drop in the first quarter, following a 9.8% drop in the last quarter of 2023.

Not just laying off the team but stopping projects in progress. You don't do that unless cashflow is dire. You wonder if Musk realized Tesla was going to be THE charging company and looked hard at the economics of it and said, Oh Shit.


Tesla’s move this week to lay off much of the team responsible for creating the largest and most successful electric-vehicle charging network in the U.S. threw the industry into a state of shock and confusion.

The layoffs halted construction work at a dozen Supercharger sites in Texas. In New York, property owners in negotiations with Tesla were told the company was withdrawing from discussions about adding chargers to their sites.

The upheaval comes as the EV industry struggles with sluggish sales growth and a bumpy rollout of a national highway-charging network.

The Tesla layoffs were sweeping and included employees in the sales force to those overseeing the construction of charging sites, according to people familiar with the decision. Contractors and executives at other automakers that have partnered with Tesla on charging described widespread confusion over the future of Tesla’s charging business.

Tesla has long been the bright spot in a messy charging world, outbuilding and outperforming other companies to create the closest thing the U.S. has to a national highway network, considered the linchpin to greater EV adoption. A Tesla pullback in EV charging could slow the entire U.S. market.

Tesla has been opening up its network to other kinds of cars and chasing—and winning—public funding for chargers, a boon to the Biden administration’s plans to build out national charging infrastructure. States have started to release the first wave of around $5 billion for a highway network, approved in the 2021 federal infrastructure law.

The layoffs caught some employees by surprise. One person who was laid off said that while it was understood the company was in a precarious position, the charging business had been viewed as a priority among employees.

Bob goes to work to make money to support himself.

The government says Bob owes them his money even though he worked for it.

Government says Bob can't have ICE anymore because he's causing the ice caps to melt and he's polluting the galaxy. If Bob just cooperates and pays his taxes, this will all go away. Think of the kids, Bob!

Government uses those dollars to fund their agenda and keep companies like Rivian afloat.

Government forces EVs on everyone so Bob pays for the same vehicle twice.
- Unless Bob's a greenie, "holier than thou" moron who willingly buys it twice.

Government rams it in Bob every year thereafter with special EV taxes for registration since he's no longer paying tax on gasoline purchases. Bob's saving the planet by relinquishing freedoms and giving his money to the government, after all.

Nonetheless, ice caps still melt, water levels start to rise, Bob's EV can't swim so he's ****ed anyway.

Now he's poor too and the only ones who can afford to reach higher ground are...drum roll please...the very same assholes who stole his money in the first place.

I got that about right?

Do not buy a Fisker, no matter how cheap, no parts.

Fisker's last few months have gone from bad to worse, and it appears the only group doing worse than the executives running the company are the people who have purchased the cars, specifically one owner whose vehicle was totaled after a $900 repair. As reported by CarScoops, Joy Warner was going about her day with her Fisker Ocean when a small accident occurred that caused mostly superficial damage to her door.

Lol She bought it after owning another EV and then when she got the settlement went out and bought another EV. Cannot fix stupid

On a side note are there no craftsmen in the auto repair industry who could not fix or fab a stupid hinge? Seems like it would be a lot cheaper then paying $53k to total it.

And oh yeah it will end up on the used car lot for $40,000

Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) CEO Elon Musk said that the company is working to get approvals to add more range for its older rear-wheel-drive (RWD) Model Y SUV vehicles for an extra fee.

His announcement came as the company launched a new version of its long-range RWD in the U.S. at an estimated range of 320 miles, the longest in the Model Y lineup. The latest variant replaces the previous entry-level Model Y RWD, which had a range of only 260 miles.

However, owners of older RWD vehicles can get another 40 to 60 miles of range for $1500 to $2000, Elon Musk said on his X platform, adding that the company is working to get approvals to implement the change.

He noted that the pay-to-unlock facility will apply for vehicles built "over the past several months" and depends on the type of battery employed in the 260-mile Model Y. "We have to pay the bills somehow," Musk said as the reason for the extra charge.

I would imagine liability stopped a custom hinge fab. Depends on the state if it can be resold with a totaled title. I would think the parts value would be bigger than the used value.

It's just not worth it when dealing with insurance companies because you'll do a ton of work to come up with that repair for it and they'll only pay you 25% markup, if that, for what you paid to fix it. I'm not going out of my way that much to come up with a repair for someone who made a terrible mistake buying a car from a bad company. Customer is taken care of regardless so that's probably why no one tried to do anything else. Plus, the insurance company would likely have an issue with a non OEM or certified part being out on the vehicle.
