My opinion...

4.10s are a decent upgrade over stock, though they are not good for the dragstrip, as they force you into 4th gear just short of the line. If this is not a concern, and highway rpm is a primary concern, then they are a valid choice.

4.30s are probably the best all-around street/strip gear for a n/a DOHC car (much like 3.73s were the preferred street/strip gear for a 5.0).

4.56s are for the more drag-race oriented, though many of us have used them in our daily drivers (including myself).

With any of them, traction will be more of an issue, so that has to be addressed.

Gas mileage will suffer if you beat on the car more (which will be easy to do with the extra gear). However, if you take it easy, gas mileage should suffer little.

couldnt have been said any better.
my vote is for at least 4.30's

So far there are 108 people that don't like quick cars. 4.10s are for 2Vs.

Right now it's almost evenly split between those that like 4.10s, and those that like 4.30s or 4.56s. Gives you an idea who hangs out on SVTP.

dude, i was gonna do the samething, BUT I DIDNT. WHY? i heard Richmond and Motive gears break and whine like a mofo! go with only FRPP gears....i wanted 3.90 gears, and i wish FRPP made some....i would have gone with those...

Does anyone have real experience w/ the richmond 3.90? If they did break, what was your application: strip or road course?

Rex-Racer...from what I can gather 3.73 to 3.90 for road course....

I run 4.30s on the road course. But our track has alot of tight turns and only 1 long straight and 1 medium/long straight.
On the longest I can get to 5th if coming out of turn 14 with no one in front of me holding me back, but 5th pulls very good with 4.30s

4.10 might not be as quick at the track, but on the street from any kind of rolling start I don't think it's gonna matter.

Love the look on your 99 Cobra. Can you give me an idea what it cost in terms of parts and paint job to put the 03 hood and front bumper on your car? I'm looking to do the same on my 01 Cobra convertible.

I'ts soon going to be new gears for me and I want to make sure I don't go overboard.

I'm looking for excellent performance while at the same time not going to radical as to ruin daily driveability.

As the title suggests.. Here are the choices I've narrowed down..

4.10's - The only set of gears that I've had real world experience with. I had them on my 01 GT and liked them alot but would the 4.30's be better?

4.30's - Are these gears marginally better than the 4.10's or does it just keep getting better?

4.56's - I hear a lot of folks love these gears and they say that it will make every gear pull like a freight train including 5th. but.. is the downside that I'll be Reving so high at anything over 55 that I'll hate driving the car? Will it ruin gas mileage, etc?

Appreciate hearing everyone's opinions, thoughts, etc.

-Brian.
I ran: 3.73s, 4.10s, 4.30s & 4.56s and the 4.56s are the best gear all around. At o/a 60 MPH I turn o/a 2350 RPMs, at 80 MPH o/a 3100s and some change.

The overall gains are just massive and you will love the way it pulls away from any gear.

Now, IMHO with stock motor and just stright bolt-ons may be 4.30s may be just the right gear for a non-drag oriented car. If you follow DR and go to the track more than once per month and you do lots of "spirited" driving in the streets then 4.56s may be the right gear which loves the extra RPMs of some HCI mods.

Well I was wanting to with 4.30's but I'm defiantely keeping my IRS. Should I go with only 3.73's instead, is that what I'm reading?

Seriously, if you want to build an N/A setup, this is the guy to model it after. Although, it would be interesting to see what Road Race cams would do to that motor...

3.73s are poo and not even worth the royal PITA the install/install cost will be. Go 4.30s all the way.

Ok, I need some help...Are 4.56's ok for the stock rear? I've heard some people say its hard on it and you can damage your differential with them. Is that true. I'm almost 100% sure I want 4.56's since I am staying NA, but thats the only thing holding me back, if this car breaks, I dont have any money to replace anything really.

while 4.56's would be spinning everything faster at every mph, i've never read or heard of any problems with the dif caused solely by gears. to me, i think higher numerical gears make it easier on everything.

the more important thing, though, is that the person who voted and pulled this thread to the top needs to fess up!!!

Soooooo, has any of you that said 4.56s are too much of a gear ACTUALLY drove with a N/A 32v with those kind of gears? Come on guys.

First of all, 3.73s is 100% pointless in a N/A 32v. I couldn't even justify spending the money. Its still too tall of a gear to get the car out of the hole really hard compared to anything higher. What exactly would you gain? Look at the weak difference yourself:

227373.gif

Now take a look at the difference between 4.10s and 4.30s. Both are interstate friendly, but 4.10s are still a little weak compared to 4.30s. If your gonna spend the money, and are too scared and/or think that 3,200 rpms @ 80mph is too much for your high reving 4-cam motor (with 4.56s), then go for the 4.30s.

410430.gif

Now, for those of you that want to launch like a MOFO, and realize that 3,200 rpms at 80mph is NOTHING (my 94 Escort is at the same rpm @80mph btw...), then I hope you get the best gear, which is 4.56s. I'm sure your next argument will be your top speed, but with 4.56s your top speed is still over 170mph (which you should never find out yourself) and 4th gear doesn't redline till 120mph. Unless you are planning on making well over 400whp, 120mph traps is way out of your reach for that to ever affect you anyway.

That is my true thoughts on this topic. Here is how I do with 4.56s, and I also cruise on the interstate all the time with no problems.
