GM thought all they had to do was slap a GTO badge on and it would be a success. Nothing about that car said GTO to those who knew the original. It looked like a Chevy Cavalier, only slightly bigger.
I think if they ended up closer to the Judge Concept they would have done much better, was thoroughly disappointed with the GrandAm version when it was finally released.

I hear the defense all the time that the GTO was just a hot LeMans/Tempest which was just a generic family coupe of the time.

It was a just a Accord Coupe, Grand Am, Solara, Cougar ect with double the horse power.

I don't think everything needs to be retro styled since even then, they always fall short of the beauty found in the original.

That said, the '04+ GTO was just a bland ugly car with a wonky rear Fender to Wheel size ratio. It had the awful bulbous styling of a Cavalier (an ugly car) terrible wheel designs etc. It looked very dated in 2004 and was not what that consumer group wanted either. People where still guzzling PT Cruisers and salivating at the 2005 Mustang (as grotesque as it was).

Would've liked an impulse blue metallic 6spd. Never happened though.

People want like $16,000 for total piles right now. GTO prices are dumb

I had a 69 back in the day, If I had one now it would have no hood scoops, no badges, lower gears and I would shoot for 425- 450 rwhp.
But I would take a 15-23 Mustang GT over it with the same specs and still run rings around it.

The '05 GTO got a bit of a bump, appearance wise, with the dual intake hood and dual exhaust outlets, which it should have had to begin with. The 50hp bump was also welcomed, as well. Power wise, the '05 didn't disappoint. I know quite a few guys who own '04-'06 GTOs. My only complaint about the late model GTOs were that they were too easily confused with the styling of the Chevy Cavalier. Which was bland. The 2004 was really bland (exterior) but the 2005-2006 improved just enough to remind folks what was under the hood. Let's compare that to the 2004 Cobra and 2004 Mach 1, performance wise. Not shabby at all, performance wise. Exterior styling? Not really close.
5.1 secs. and 13.5 @ 108mph - 2005 GTO 0-60 and 1/4 mile
4.9 secs. and 13.4 @ 109mph - 2004 Cobra 0-60 and 1/4 mile
5.3 secs. and 13.5 @ 107mph - 2004 Mach 1 0-60 and 1/4 mile

The '60s and early '70s GTO were well known for their power and street prowess. 400hp ('05 and '06) in a street car was right up there with the best of muscle cars of those years.

I think the GTO was the one time a typical rebadging GM special worked out. I always loved GTO's and wanted one back in the day but at the time I was too young and couldn't afford it. The GTO looked like other Pontiac's from the time and if you think it looks like a Cavalier I think you need to get your eyes checked lol.

Pontiac G5 is what people asked....

I was dumb enough to also get a G8 a few years later

What downhill quarter-mile strip was a Mach one trapping 107 and a LS2 GTO trapping 108

I bought an Impulse Blue GTO in 2004. Upgraded the hood, rear bumper, tail lights, and wheels. Added Pedders suspension. I thought it was a great car until I bought my GT350. Sold the GTO and my HHR SS shortly after. I just couldn't drive them anymore.
