I think the masks help to spread infection.
Think about how often you touch it, then a door, grocery store item, shopping cart, then the mask/face again. Constantly transferring germs from the mask, and surface germs back to your mask.
Watch other people. Constantly touching their mask and face now, which is natural with a mask on.

I think it creates a false sense of security. Normally someone without a mask would cough or sneeze into their arm or whatever polite gesture we are taught to mitigate spreading germs, but with a mask on many people believe it will catch their germs so they aren't taking the same amount of caution as they did before. They may still turn away from you when they sneeze but they sure as hell aren't sneezing into their arms which means all of those germs are spewing out through the mask into the air.
I think if anything the masks may have made it worse for that reason.
