A confident person who has no fear of talking to people, whether on the phone or in person.

You need to be trustworthy, hard working, expect long hours, self-motivated, determined to make every customer's buying experience the best it can be (ROI is high if you can do this, you will sell the same customers several times over) just to name a few.

A drivers license
A suit
A pulse

No seriously though. Put in the hours, know your product, and be honest with people

I've gone into 3 or 4 dealerships in the last 4 months and still have yet to buy something. I will eventually, and as I tell every salesman, for the right price I would absolutely buy today. So far they have all been cool with me and none have given me attitude when I tell them I am truly there just to check things out and I am really not ready to buy yet. A good move on their part because they have established a lead and I may end up buying from one of them one day.

Question for those working in the business:
Does your dealer employ any part time salesmen? If so, what kind of hours do they work?

Dont get me wrong, Im polite and will help anyone that needs it, but its a pain in the ass. I dont get paid to hold your hand and test drive 5 different cars. Its ridiculous. And no, no part timers here, you cant be part time and do this job.

Hm. Well send me your customers that only want to drive. I'll let them drive as much as they'd like.

Being a sales consultant with Ford, I have always tried to be honest....unfortunately..some sales people have and will continue to create a bad impression in the industry. As an opening to a customer with a trade in. Customer: " how much is my trade worth ? "
Answer: " less than you probably want " Customer: " how much is the new car ? "
Answer: " more than you want to spend " Outcome...gets a lot of crap out of the way and now we can get to business.. I always stay honest...even if the customer may not be.

Idk about your store but mine is far too busy to do that all day. If I do that I'm missing out on sales.

In my short time as a salesman, I was the guy who was truthful and tried to find the best car the customer was looking for in their price range. I never tried to bs or lie to get the most out of them. I didnt do good at all. If you want to be a successful salesman, be prepared to lie your ass off and try to milk every last penny out of a customer even if it is $5k over their budget.

I remember walking into a ford dealership looking at the new, at the time, 2011 5.0s. A salesman walks up to me and just starts spitting out this bullshit. I told him i was just looking and that i will probably end up in a Terminator. His exact words " Those cars are old and falling apart, this car is brand new and comes with a warranty and would smoke any of those like they where standing still, we have a few of them in the back that we cant even give away". Curiosity got the best of me so i walked to the back and saw 3 new edge Mustangs, 1 2002 v6 and 2 Gts with $12,000 price tags.

If you turn down customers because they just want to drive something and think on it, you're missing sales.

Most of the time the customer that is the most work, is one of your better customers down the road as well.

what? You don't need to be trustworthy to sell cars. 99% of these jerkoffs are snakes. Being trustworthy will only help you though & wouldn't you sleep better at night knowing you are not a POS? ;)

So you're telling us that you don't want to do your job. What a douche. :bored:

I'm not the easiest guy to sell a car to b/c I won't put up w/their bs & know exactly what I want and I know more about the car than the salesman. However, I'm there to buy something, or at least try to buy it. I gladly walk out & go elsewhere when your type comes around.

Been to both already. Didn't get thrown out, tool. Test drove what I wanted just fine.

Maybe I should go back to your dealer where they lost the keys to the car we came in to drive. GTFO

Was just emailing back & forth with a local dealer on a car. He didn't like my offer which is fine. I said no thank you & went on my merry way. He kept emailing me trying to talk me into it. I again said no thank you. Then I get this...

you were never a customer and never was going to be a customer because you did not have the money you are all talk.

Maybe he thinks his $8k car is a 6 figure exotic?
