For a contemporary author Baldacci is good, "The Winner" is an awesome read, highly recommend it.

I've read most of Micheal Crichton's collection including the stuff being released after his death. Right now I'm reading all of M.R. Forbes' sci-fi series, probably 20 books in so far in the past 4 months. Nothing advanced or crazy in-depth, but I love his writing style and the way he develops characters.
