We find out just how much oil is collected by the SVTP GT's JLT Oil Separator on a 540-mile road trip to VIR.
We recently took a little road trip to Virginia International Raceway in the 2012 Coyote Powered SVTP Mustang GT. This was well over a 500 mile round trip, and we did it in one day. The ride to VIR and back gave us an opportunity to run a little experiment with the JLT Oil Separator on the SVTP GT. We had done an update article in the past about the effectiveness of the JLP Oil Sep, but this time it was going to be a bit different. This trip was basically going to just be 500 miles of highway driving. It’s basically the easiest practical driving scenario you can have with a car, so it would be really interesting to see how much engine oil that the motor would ingest through the intake on such a drive. Follow along with the pics below, I think you’ll be surprised:
We started off with a freshly cleaned, oil free, catch-can.
We screwed the bottom of the separator back on and went for a ~540 mile drive.
The total trip was 542.6 miles.
All in a little less than nine hours.
After the trip this is what we found.
I'm relieved to know this didn't find its way into the engine.
It was time to break out the lab equipment and see how much oil we had collected.
After driving 540 miles the JLT Oil Sep contained near-as-makes-no-difference seven milliliters.
It may not seem like a lot but the engine spit out this much oil under the easiest driving most cars ever experience. Had we thrown in a few WOT pulls or a little track time I'm sure this amount would have easily been doubled.
