LOL, just, no.

$10k in mods to a 99/01 will not net you $20k 03/04 Cobra results.

You cannot get a built motor, power adder, T56 and a whole gamut of other differences for $10k. Sure you can throw on a vortech or something for a tune of $4-5k when all is said and done, but you still dont have a built motor or tranny to hold it past that.

Ditto, all these guys that think they can take an 99/01 and build it to be a terminator for less are crazy.

I think an eaton swap is about 3500 with no built motor and you're limited to 450 rwhp. If you do a built motor and aftermarket blower you're looking at 10k right there, no transmission, no fuel system etc.

As for the fuel system a BAP on an 03/04 will get you 600rwhp no problem.

I would go for the Mach 1, better interior, solid rear axle, shaker, better heads/cams.

mach 1s are ugly. Not sure why anyone would be caught dead in one. :burn:

pepboys front chin spoiler + ralleye wheels from 1971 + shaker hood scoop = fail

Man, you really got me there, this thing is ugly!! /sarcasm :lol1:

This is my wife's Mach. I mean every time we go somewhere in it people are always saying how nice it looks and how bad ass it sounds. Every time I take it to the gas station someone always has something nice to say about it. I wish my 12 5.0 sounded HALF as good as our Mach does.

.

That's the main issue right there. If you want a Terminator, buy a damn Terminator!

It's not cheaper to do a 99/01 and make it the same as something you want.

Where the 99/01's shine is in those crazy NA builds or if you're wanting something to go track with. They are superb for that.

If you want a 600rwhp street brawler, buy the Terminator instead!

It's more than just tuning……. try different cams and heads as well. So no, its not the same "exact" engine.
The article was against the Terminator, not the 99/01 and it wasnt really against it, they just said they got better numbers on that particular track with the Mach. It doesn't mean it is a better handling car, two big differnces.

I agree on being preference. I prefer the Cobra overall from the better looking seats (Mach's feel better though), the gauges, and the rims (I HATE the Mach rims). The Mach had easily the better colors though and that shaker

Sure it isn't the exact same engine but they are the same basic motor and cams and heads could fall under the tuning thing. they make about the same numbers so when it comes to the differences in these cars the motor isn't really a good place to look.

I know it was between a Terminator but that was to illustrate my point, that just because a car makes huge power, even with a better suspension, it may not translate to the track.

I completely agree with you about the wheels. I really don't like the wheels. that will be one of the first things to change on my car. But I love how beefy the mach one looks and I was just never able to really like the front bumper of the 01 Cobra.

So again it comes to the preference thing. These cars are so diverse and you can do so many things to them that no that what you start with is really doesn't matter a whole lot. Each of these cars tend to take on the personality of their owner over the years. That is one of the things I love about the mustang.

Thanks. They are 18x9 front and 18x10 in the rear Fr500 reps.

Haha, thanks. It's been the best car we have ever owned and that includes the other 15 Stangs I have owned. We bought this car brand new in 03 and it's never given us one single problem in the whole time we've owned it. Still no creaks or rattles and solid like a new car.

Great looking mach very nicely setup

Thanks. :)

Fiend of mine was looking for a nice 99 or 01 cobra, he started looking for a mach now cuase you seem to be able to get one for a a better purchase price. Also his insurance would be better with a mach than a cobra by about 10 bucks a month.

the '01 for sale in my previous post is a great car if he's still considering one.

I have under 3K into my eaton swap and that includes an 03 tank and pumps. Or you can pickup a used 03 motor and trans for 7 grand. Starting from scratch I would just get an 03 for the resale value but to say that you can't build an 01 for less in nonsense.

you could be like the one dude around here somewhere that has $35K tied up in his '01 and it's no faster or better than a ported 03/04.

to me the beauty of the '01 and Mach 1 is having a car that's NOT a Terminator. like i mentioned earlier, i'm looking at eventually picking up an '01 for Auto-X. i really think it's a better car than my '03 for the INTENDED use.

everything is relative...

I loved my 01 it was a great car I also am a fan of the Mach it's weird I wanted a Terminator back in 06 when I got a 01 but couldnt afford a Terminator. It came down to a Mach 1 and 01 Cobra the Mach had lower miles but needed tires bad and I tried to get them to come down 1k they wouldnt budge it was Azure Blue. So I ended up with the 01 which needed nothing. It was a fun car but when it came down to it this past year I got my dream car I wanted since I first saw a terminator. It also came down to that modding the 01 doing a eaton swap forging the motor a T56 it resale value just worked out better to buy the terminator but back on topic Machs and 01 Cobras are both great I do think the Machs had better color choices even though I like True Blue my 01 was black only complaint about the car I would never own another black car look good when clean but super hard to keep up and maintain.

I LMAO'd at this, so thanks for that! As for the 01 Cobra and/or 03/04 Mach 1... many feel they were a stop-gap GM solution till the Terminator came out (thank you, John Coletti). I like them both for the heritage and possibilities. I like the 01 Cobra seats, but never much liked the front end (Terminator is much better, IMHO). The Machs had great seats and shaker, but I never liked the wheels (reminded me, and many others, of Hot Wheels cars). But damn, both these cars can be made to look very good. Electric Green Cobras and Machs with FR500s make me drool.

The best way to tell popularity is to look at thread counts and sales #s around here, and the Terminator still blows most away. I think that body style and power train combo is awesome (hell I owned one) just on its own, but both the 01 Cobra, and the Machs, can be made into very nice machines.

Driven a Mach 1, and own a 2001 Cobra....I will take my Cobra, I'm not a big straight line person and I like the Cobra better because the Mach was nowhere near as fun for me in corners. It's all in what you want to use the car for.

Straight line use - advantage Mach

Curvey roads - advantage Cobra

For what it's worth, I had more fun with my '99 Cobra than I did with my '03.

The new edge Cobra's aren't nearly as powerful and they have a somewhat peaky powerband, but they also have a lot going for them. If you like corners, they are one of the better handling mustangs. The all aluminum 4.6 with the addition of the heavier IRS in the back provided much better weight distribution.

That high revving 4.6 sings on the track when you can keep the revs up as well. Just a few minor tweeks and you've got an enjoyable, all around vehicle that doesn't break the bank.

I'd do the following at a minimum

Cold Air Intake
Full Exhaust
4.10's
Tune

Add a set of good tires and enjoy a well balanced, relatively quick and reliable mustang.

It's not going to shred the doors off of the quick stuff out these days, but you'll have fun in a car like that.

If you wanted a bit more, I'd add a fluidamper style underdrive pully (the one from the 00R is a good choice) as well as a ported upper and lower intake. There's also been some wild NA FR500 engine builds over the years, plus you have all the same turbo options etc.

This was my '99
1999Cobra058.jpg

First three paragraphs pretty much sums it up for me. 99/01 Cobras are a bit under-rated in the Fun department. I actually enjoy carving rough back roads...the IRS...despite being compromised...really works. Fun to behold. Cobra sticks well.

IMHO...the Cobra is the nicer looking car...cleaner look.

I said it before...the 2015 Mustang is the full realization of the original New Edge Cobra concept. 3,400 lbs., N/A, IRS, better balance. With 450hp...I'd jump on a '15 GT...in a heart beat. I've been waiting for the new more sophisticated look and the IRS in the '15. But, I will not get rid of my '01. There is a common lineage in these two Mustangs.

I've owned a 99 cobra and have an 03 Mach.
I like the mach more, the shaker is like a car guy's bobblehead, seats are better, solid axle hooks better than the irs.
The only thing going for the cobra was ride comfort over rough roads.
