hey guys,

in 2016/2017 i will be buying a cobra and require it to be converted to RHD. i spoke to someone in a mustang club here, he said the car he bought was converted in the US and backed by ford?
it was a 00 GT, I'm at a loss as to who he said did it. it was definitely done well after the car was produced (i think he said he imported it 5 or so years ago)
so i thought i would ask, is their any reputable shops stateside that can do this?
I am EXTREMELY picky, and if something is not up to par i will flip my shit, so I'm not after junky workmanship.

i don't mind paying for quality workmanship, however the only reputable place here in australia (IMO) want 30-35K to convert it, which seems a little bit over the top to me. these cars are fairly simple, and then when i looked at the labour charge it made sense ($150hr).

if you know of any companies, please let me know, it would be much appreciated.

edit: this is how picky i am, this is a street car that gets driven thousands of miles yearly, and this is the sort of workmanship i expect.

Hi, from a fellow Aussie.

Not an 03-04 Cobra, but for reference, I've attached a pic of the interior of my car. Converted locally. If you want any extra details, feel free to PM me.

You are in Australia? Didn't they export Cobras there in 2002 as RHD? I don't know what kind of production numbers you are looking at there, but maybe you can track one down as a donor?

That's going to be a hard one over here. RHD parts are almost non-existent. I think you would be better off getting a shop in the land of OZ who has experience doing this conversion. When your think about all the mirror image stuff you need right down to the heater box it's going to be a uphill battle sourcing all those parts here in the states. I'd be scouring the web for a wrecked RHD donor car. Good luck

yeah we have 02 cars, there was a couple of hundred converted.... next to impossible to find anything at all for them, in fact most people get parts from the states for them.

Do you have more pictures of your car? Is it a GT500? I see it appears to be automatic. Very cool.

haha, its a 71 datsun 1600, its a friends car that we work on fairly regularly, he's an auto electrician by trade, and he has OCD, which over the last 5 years has landed us all with OCD in relation to cars, i have a heap of folders of cars we have all worked on together for customers.

about to start a C10 either late this year early next, i do the mechanicals, one mate is a sprayer & beater, another is the auto elec, and we have a trimmer we use.

by any chance was that mustang motorsport?

You guessed correctly. They're easily the leading RHD Mustang converters in Aus - other than the fact the hood release is on the passenger side, you couldn't tell it didn't come like that from the factory.

You are in Australia? Didn't they export Cobras there in 2002 as RHD? I don't know what kind of production numbers you are looking at there, but maybe you can track one down as a donor?

You're correct. They sold 100 from memory over here. There's two or three currently for sale nation-wide.

I sure do, would you like interior or exterior pictures?

You got it, 2008 GT500 personally imported and then RHD converted here. You got it right again; it's got an FB 4r70w transmission, 2800 stall, controlled by a Baumann controller. Thanks a lot! :)

even the tickford converted ones had the hood release on the LH side, in fact you'd be surprised how many cars actually do, including AUS built cars....

damn yours looks nice, under bonnet and interior pics?

is it a state regulation that a car has to be converted? I would think it would not matter as long as you drive on the right (left lol) side of the road.

I remember several years ago there was a thread on here about a converted mystichrome that had a lot of pictures. iirc a lot of the underhood and underdash stuff stayed the same but had cables and extensions to make it work. will look for the link

edit: post #15 and #88

you absolute legend, thanks a tonne. just send OZDUDE a pm, see what he comes back with.

unfortunately it is a regulation to register the car.... which really frustrates me, unless i wait until the car is 30 years old, at which point i won't have to... but thats another 19 years away.

Thus the plate, DAT 071. Nice looking Datsun. Extremely clean. The owner is obviously meticulous about detailing.

yup... he has OCD, not joking, so everything that we do on it has to be perfect.... top auto elec though, and probably the only one i would trust tbh.
btw, he thinks the engine bay is messy, so we have to re-do it again, make it neater.
