Is it still considered a barn find if I'm the one who put the car there? :D

My first car was a 1978 Mercury Bobcat Runabout I bought from an old lady after her husband passed with 41,000 miles for $825 dollars in 1998. By 2001 I was on the 2nd transmission, 2nd rearend, and I overheated the engine so I pushed it into my old man's barn where it hasn't moved since. I've recently came to a point in my life where I can finally do something with the car. I'm just replacing the engine with another naturally aspirated power plant out of an '86 Mustang so I can focus on other areas on the vehicle.

Here are some pictures back when I still drove it:

Fast forward to this weekend where I pulled the tarp off the car and yanked it out of the barn. Paint is a little damaged, rust has started in a few areas down low, and the suspension is shot.

Today I cleaned the paint back up and vacuumed the mice skeletons out of the interior.

This week I'll get the old motor out and see where that takes me. Thanks for looking.

I'd love to do an engine swap right out the gate, but I want to get this car back up to date before I worry about power. I've always envisioned an SHO V6 stuffed in there though. Some day.

Current curb weight is around 2,200 lbs.

Wish I had been alive back in the day to see some of the goofy cars they rolled out. Good luck on the build. Looks like it survived pretty well in the barn

Oh never mind that. I stuffed a 4G63 into a ratty Fox Body backed by a TH400. Then I knocked up my wife and abandoned the project. It "would" have been sweet.

Looks great for being left under a tarp so long. No 2.3t in the future?

not really a barn find if it was never lost. But it'll be a fun project! I say mini tub and a 408 and go racing!

I haven't seen one of those in years. Pintos, yes. Bobcats, no. And it's in decent shape so you've got something fairly good to start with. It's also good that you're not rushing into a motor decision quickly, but instead want to get the car massaged a bit first. In the meantime you can do some thinking/searching and then when you're ready for the motor you will have hopefully decided exactly what you want. Neat little car.
