I've owned 3 cobras with t56's in them, previous two both were 26 spline setup's with different clutches and flywheels but both had tri ax shifters.
When I bought this current cobra it had all the basic starting mods, which was great. Lowered, pullied, exhaust. Everything was done right and in the order it should. It had MGW orange handle and shifter with stock drive line. I was fine with having this shifter as I had heard nothing but good things and it seemed like a cult following, cool. As I drove the car over the months it never really made me feel as confident when shifting hard in the car. I'm known to bang some gears with the best of them and it was depressing. I chalked it up to being the stock driveline being pissed off. Well when my stock clutch died it was time for the upgrade. 26 spline, spec 3+, flywheel... the works. As I broke it in, everything felt great but still had that "off" to me. I managed to do decent shifting when I took it to the track but never really felt confident in powershifting.
So I was on the hunt for a tri ax, happened to find a guy wanting to trade his for an MGW (perfect imo). Swapped it out last night, holy ****. This is what my car was missing. First pull I did it was mint, never felt that good before in this car and gear shifts were perfect. Raced a Challenger today 1-4th and ever gear was spot on and no worries.
I don't think the MGW is terrible and certainly better than the stock shifter but compared to the tri ax for me, it's night and day.
I also have a roommate who feels the exact same way and has owned both in similar setups as me.
Thoughts, anyone tried both same car and same setup?
