I've owned 3 cobras with t56's in them, previous two both were 26 spline setup's with different clutches and flywheels but both had tri ax shifters.

When I bought this current cobra it had all the basic starting mods, which was great. Lowered, pullied, exhaust. Everything was done right and in the order it should. It had MGW orange handle and shifter with stock drive line. I was fine with having this shifter as I had heard nothing but good things and it seemed like a cult following, cool. As I drove the car over the months it never really made me feel as confident when shifting hard in the car. I'm known to bang some gears with the best of them and it was depressing. I chalked it up to being the stock driveline being pissed off. Well when my stock clutch died it was time for the upgrade. 26 spline, spec 3+, flywheel... the works. As I broke it in, everything felt great but still had that "off" to me. I managed to do decent shifting when I took it to the track but never really felt confident in powershifting.

So I was on the hunt for a tri ax, happened to find a guy wanting to trade his for an MGW (perfect imo). Swapped it out last night, holy ****. This is what my car was missing. First pull I did it was mint, never felt that good before in this car and gear shifts were perfect. Raced a Challenger today 1-4th and ever gear was spot on and no worries.

I don't think the MGW is terrible and certainly better than the stock shifter but compared to the tri ax for me, it's night and day.

I also have a roommate who feels the exact same way and has owned both in similar setups as me.

Thoughts, anyone tried both same car and same setup?

I don't have a short throw, and on my old black 03 I had a pro 5.0 and it sucked ass, so that kinda scared me away from buying anymore. Im on stock shifter which is pretty damn good, but its just hit and miss with me (sometimes I miss a gear which pisses me off)

I was searching around for some, it seems most people prefer MGW, but I will go with a steeda tri ax. There are two of the fastest IRS/6speed cobras that are in the 9s with steeda triax's so there goes my choice :)

interesting....I had the exact opposite outcome. I traded my triax for the MGW. Couldn't be happier. I will never run anything other than an MGW.

I could hit gears with the MGW, just not the same as the TriAx for me. It's just so much more smoother and feels like its "in" when I hit the gear without any resistance vs the mgw almost felt like it needed an extra nudge.

Hahaha! So funny! That was my problem with the steeda! Everything felt so vague. Third was always a trick! MGW is like butter. I just push and can't help but hit third!

Glad we both got something we like!!

I took my MGW out and put in the stock shifter, and what a difference that made! Not wanting the stock shifter I went a head and ordered the Pro 5.0 and hated the reach/location of my shifts. Added a Tri Ax handle to the Pro 5.0 and now I'm truly happy(for the moment, lol). I had a Pro 5.0 in my LS1 Formula that I drag raced 95% of the time, so I thought I would go with a shifter that I had experience with. The MGW was just too knotchy, felt like I was going thru 2 gates into each gear. I called George @ MGW and he said it's me. Oh well... I can remember back when I had my Formula, people would always complain about their T56's or hydraulic problems and I never understood because mine was butter smooth. I think the shoes on the other foot with the Cobra.

Guys with the mgw's, do you powershift? drive to the edge so to say? Broke7 ish, it was hard to do that with the MGW, as texas cobra 04 said, notchy and felt like 2 gates is exactly what I meant. MGW isn't a bad shifter, just didn't work for me is all. 05 satin you will like it man, sounds like it's what you're wanting!

Afraid to powershift but I like triax. After learning a few tricks on shifting I love it

I went from a Tri ax to an MGW and was blown away with the difference. When powershifting, I'm spot on every time with the MGW, something that was basically impossible with the Tri ax. To each their own.....I say go with whatever works for you:thumbsup:

I have the Blue Thunder from UPR. Hey, I couldnt beat the deal-$99 brand new with the billet stick. As far as shifting goes, it doesnt feel any different than the Hurst on the Tremec in my 88LX. I would like to someday test drive one of the others so I can make a better comparison

i rock the mgw and had a pro 5.0 prior. It was the hardest reach for me. my knuckles were pretty much touching the cd player when i was shifting into third gear. As far as triax goes, my only experience was in my old 02 gt and i just remember it being kinda loud. I like my mgw. I dont beat on it terribly hard tho. nice and quiet with cobrabob gaskets.

When I got my cobra, I got screwed with the leftover part's! HaHa It had a steeda base with a pro 5.0 handle. That set up went in the trash can, I like my MGW but I liked the triax in my foxbody. I thought about buying a triax handle but the base felt sloppy and If I was going to buy new I wanted to try the MGW out, I'm happy so far but only have 1000 mile and no passes at the track with it yet, so the jury is still out.

Steeda Tri-Ax FTMW !! Never missed a gear and it feels so damn good.. Drove my buddy's 04 DSG who had the orange handle MGW, and it was not my cup of tea.. It was more stiff to shift whereas the tri-ax shifted like butter with ease.. To each their own..

Tri-Ax FTW as well..

I've had the same conclusion as the OP, but at a more expensive cost.

Here is my quote from another thread:

OP if you wanna drive leisurely like a 60-70 year old, then the MGW is for you, however, if you wanna slam through the gears as fast as you can without worrying about missing third gear, then the Steeda Tri-Ax is for you.

I've had both.

I used to have a Tri-Ax a few years ago, and after buying into the hype of the MGW, I ditched my Tri-Ax for it. Shortly after, I slammed into 1st gear at 70+ mph instead of 3rd while racing a 6.0L GTO (I was winning btw), and you can imagine the carnage.

I sold the MGW and went back to a Tri-Ax.
