The spyderco sharpmaker is great for starters, but nothing replaces a good set of water stones and learning to sharpen 'freehand'.

I'd recommend a 400 grit, 800 grit, 2000 grit and finish it off w/a leather belt stropping.

Got the black LMF2 for Christmas. I now have both the tan and black editions of the LMF, as well as the "drink yer own piss" knife.

I also have a black one and think it's a pretty good knife.

IMO for the money a Becker BKII Campanion is hard to beat. It's like a little hatchet that also works very well as a knife. It chops wood like a mofo, but also does great at cutting, carving slicing, and whatever else a knife does.

It's thick and very sturdy and I highly recommend one.

Not to derail the thread too much, but out of curiosity, how many of you guys use your knives on a daily/regular basis and what kind of things do you use them for? A lot of these knives look really cool, and I have thought from time to time about getting one......just not sure if I'd be getting one just to be getting one, or if I'd actually find a use for it regularly.

^^I use mine every day on boring little mundane tasks, such as opening packages or boxes. I could get by without one but it is nice to have the tool when I want one. I also always have a small flashlight and a pen in my pockets with me, for basically the same reason.

I definitely don't need as many as I have but they are fun to tinker with.
