how much are you guys spending on oil changes? I take mine to the dealer for the $30 special. When I had a shop do my clutch I bought oil change stuff and even the Motorcraft stuff and the filter was way more than $30.

Dealers buy bulk oil and bulk cases of oil filters that come in one box. Not individually boxed. I would recommend buying bottled oil. Bulk tends to get moisture in the tanks.

I have seen the oil tanks at my dealer and they aren't gigantic plus they are stored in the shop so I wouldn't worry all that much about condensation myself.

Just went on autozone.com and had a serious sticker shock. For mobile 1 it would be really close to $100 to do my own oil change.

Even the Motorcraft stuff would be over $50.

Even though I only get 2 oil changes a year I would still rather save the money.

I was using Fords blend oil and the motor had a lot of valve train noise ,run ruff and would use a little oil . I switched to Amsoil SS 5-30 the motor has smoothed out less valve train noise I also picked up about a 1 1/2 mpg I have about 3,500 miles on the Amsoil and so far I have not had any oil consumption.

O rly? How much is the Amsoil cost and does it allow longer oil change intervals?

I'm in Montreal and the weather is similar to NY in the summer.

I was hesitating between RP api or RP hps and Amsoil.

My car is a dd but i store it by December so i do not run it a lot with temperature below 32F.

I emailed Unleashedbeast and he gave me a very detailed answer as to what i should use.

I followed his recommendation which are based on facts and analysis and ordered Amsoil signature 10W30 + Synshromesh (mtf) for the trans.

Cost is 8.50cdn and about 7.50us per liter.
You also need the preferred cust membership which cost 10$.
If you order for 2 oil change plus the trans and gears you save quite a bit and its worth it to get the membership.

I did.

Yeah that doesn't seem like a good match for my car as I would only have to change the oil once every 3 years. I'll stick with my dealer oil changes.

Use Amsoil and change it once a year. That's what I've always done with my Mustangs.

You can change the Amsoil once a year. after using amsoil in my car I wouldn't go back to the Ford oil the motor runs that much smoother but its all in what you can budget to me since I drive the car a lot it was worth it.

That's why you don't buy oil at Auto Zone or any other auto parts store with their insanely high markup. You can get a 5 qt jug of M1 at Wal Mart for $25 and that's the regular, non sale price. That's roughly $40 for your full 8 qts and its much better oil than Motorcraft. They also have PZ Plat for $22/5 qts and now there's a $10 rebate, so it's $12 for 5 qts.

With all due respect, I don't understand why someone pays $30k+ for a high performance car and cheaps out to save $10 on an oil change. Skip a couple lunches at McDonalds and put some quality oil in it.

What exactly are you afraid of?

You would be amazed the kind of things that happen regularly at dealerships & oil change shops. The kinds of stupidity I seen in the 4 years I worked in that area was just mind blowing. Oil filters not being tightened, double gaskets resulting in engine failure, drain plugs stripped/crossthreaded, engines accidently filled with washer fluid and/or the wrong oil completely, engines underfilled/overfilled, transmissions drained rather than engines by accident, oil stains in interiors/carpets, windshields broken while changing wiper blades, oily hand and finger prints all over the door/hood, on and on...

I got a few "free" oil change coupons from the dealer when I purchased the car, and I can guarantee they will never be used.

It really isn't just the cost. Driving to the dealer and walking the lot for half an hour is easier then driving to the store for oil, changing the oil then finding a place to dispose of the oil. Plus the dealer keeps track of the oil changes which is handy in addition to having the dealer do the other routine maintenance.

Lastly is how long I own my cars. Here are the new cars I have bought in the last several years.

2007 Toyota Yaris- Owned for 6 months sold with 1,300 miles
2007 Mustang- Owned for 3 years sold with 12,000 miles
2007 Expedition- Currently own with 42k miles
2011 Mustang- Owned 1 year, took 4 long road trips sold with 11k miles
2011 Mustang- Currently own 16 months, 6k worth of road trips 13k miles

I will probably not own a car long enough to gain the long term benefits of synthetic oil. I have owned cars that I put synthetic oil in because of the nature of the car.

Big turbo non water cooled srt4 Neon and AP1 S2000.
