Remember, well 60% of the military are Southerners. If a refusal movement starts, it will be Southern based. I for one do not believe that this military will shoot it's own people.

No this military wouldn't shoot at it's own people.. It would be a overthrow of the Government (politicians).. Governments collapse all the time.. We are like 100yrs or something over due..

I think what would happen if it actually came to that would be a impeach of the president or something along those lines.

Just look at Syria, mass defections all the way from Generals to conscripted soldiers.

Yes, many have defected, but I think the majority have stuck with Al-Assad.
Al-Assad troops killed nearly 400 Syrian people in just one day last Saturday.:nonono:

Oaths of Enlistment and Oaths of Office

"I, _____, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God."

This is 100% correct!!

But the one thing everyone is forgetting! We the People are the government! If you don't like some of the laws get involved write to your congress let them know how you feel and find out what it takes to change policies. Biggest problem with our government today is most everyday Americans don't care to do anything about it. Majority will always win and if you don't agree with the majority talk about it and hopefully get the majority to change (For the right reasons)

In the oath to carry out orders, there is a caveat, "the orders must be lawful". How a politician can give a lawful order to shoot citizens? Well they can't .

A lot of encouraging responses in this thread...depending on how you look at it I guess. And by the way, thank you to those of you who do currently and have served our country.

Yes we the people are the government, the problem is the folks in Washington always seem to forget this. For the first time in my life I finally started to do something about it by writing to my congressional representatives. I wish a lot more folks would start doing this as well and make an effort to actually get involved!

That's another big problem.

People rely too much on others. They never take the time to do their own research and gather their own opinion off of that research. I've see too many people, democrats and republicans alike, believe whatever their party believes in because they're "republicans" or "democrats". People these days believe whatever they're told.

+1 all of us really need to write our representatives. Remember, they work for us and if we dont agree with something it is our duty to let them know.

We also have a lot more technology and training than terrorist groups. Why can't we eliminate all of them???
Exactly. The military can bring all of the weapons and technology they want but fighting enemies you can't identify isn't an easy task. I'm not saying we could beat or military but fighting civilians has a history of being difficult.

keep in mind, that just bc farmer joe has an old hunting rifle does not put him on even playing ground with an equipped Marine/soldier. greater numbers does not always make up for far greater training/gear/firepower

it's a very hazy, gray area. i think that most military members wouldn't fire on general public...but if these 'civilians' were bunkered in, firing at them then i could see it getting ugly.

Not to mention drones, apaches, f22, etc..

This is kind of a stupid question to begin with. Our government would never attack its people on a full scale. To do so would render the government obsolete. The government has no power without its constituents. People would stop paying taxes, going to work, obeying laws, etc... then the government would collapse.

Yep. We've been doing it for the past eleven years.

You guys don't need to worry about the military. You guys need to worry about your local LE and all the fun 3 letter agencies (obviously DoD is 3 letter but no need to really worry there), out there...

Well I would go awol and I'd be taking whatever I could get my hands on with me. There's a lot of stupid people in here that would follow orders blindly, but in the Marines, NCOs are not robots, that simply doesn't make for a good NCO who are the backbone of the Corps. While you don't openly state your opinion you're pretty much questioning and scrutinizing orders passed down to you because they are usually retarded to begin with.

With something so black and white and clearly wrong, such as using force against your own countrymen, will cause a shitstorm that will result in either most of your NCOs and officers ignoring an unlawful order or straight up deciding to turn on the government and use their force to remove the leadership. That would be the best outcome from the whole ordeal but it would take some major leadership to accomplish it. But I like to think with Generals such as General Mattis and even our Commandant that they would ignore the orders themselves, especially General Mattis!

As long as it's a legal and lawful order, I will follow it.

Some of you may want to remember what constitutes a lawful order.

Exactly, that why I never commented. The ATF, FBI will knocking on doors before tanks roll through the streets. If the latter does happen then we as a nation are too far gone.

I see a complete erosion of society and government breakdown if that ever were to happen.
