Side with the people. I imagine 95% of us would. You always have those ate-up idiots that are always looking for a pat on the back that make up the remaining 5%.

Oaths of Enlistment and Oaths of Office

"I, _____, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God."

Which of course we must decide which order is lawful, we of course would know the threat is domestic based on the OP. I have no obligation to rape or commit crimes at an Officer's whim.

UCMJ says as much and willing/knowingly following an illegal order is a crime in itself.

I was in the Army, but no way would I have ever fired on innocent civilians exercising their constitutional rights.

as an enlisted person, you have a duty NOT to follow illegal orders given by a superior officer or NCO.

The last two posters, in my view, hit the nail on the head. We are sworn in under what was quoted but if that order given to us is illegal or unlawful and/or we see a domestic threat then we are obligated to disobey the unlawful/illegal order and fight the threat.

Given the current state of the country, the political and class divide/warfare, and the constant threat to our constitutional rights, if there was a civil uprising against the government, who would you side with?

Based on the oath of enlistment you swore to uphold the constitution as well as obey the orders of the President. Would you side with the people, or would there be an American version of Tiananmen Square?

Sure this is hypothetical and I'm am in no way promoting an uprising other than by doing so by exercising your right to vote.

i swore to uphold the constitution, but if the government orders me to fight against it and go against my country, then why on earth would i obey that? i would never turn my back on my country, my people, then i might as well leave the country to join another one so i could fight against my own fellas! **** that.

Have you seen that TV show Last Resort? In the show most of the characters are fighting with honor and trying to balance their love for the country and the uniform they wear every day. I imagine it would be like this, but I usually give people too much credit.

There are a lot of people in the military who are not free thinkers. I like to think they are brain washed, so in rearguards to what happens in a scenario like this... it would be nasty, just like Syria.

I side with civi's, that being said, I was in a sniper section for over 3 years. I can tag a head shot at a further distance than 99% of civilian optics can even focus on, let alone provide an accurate sight picture. It's not the same bud. If it were to go full fledge, and no one left the military side, civilians would be fawked. Just being honest. Not to mention, you wouldn't see 99% of us. It's all in the training man

We also have a lot more technology and training than terrorist groups. Why can't we eliminate all of them???

the first line in our swear in was i___ swear to uphold and to defend the constitution of the united states of america.

its put first because its the most important. our politicians have forgot this.

after that part is says i will obey the orders of the president and the officers appointed over me.

to me personally the constitution takes president of the latter.

i would follow orders till the constitution is breached then im all in for the people.

Civilians look to TV shows for their information and generally have no idea the day to day operations of a soldier.

The current military is an all volunteer army. The absence of free thinkers can be found in every profession. Furthermore the degradation of society would mean ... no pay. Sorry, I'm not living in a piss smelling baracks without pay. No matter what the POTUS says. The government has to fulfill their side of the contract you sign.

I can't think of anyone I served with that would think of firing on civilians as a lawful order. 9 out of 10, or possibly even more of soldiers, marines, sailors and airmen are patriots.

I think it would get tough real quick. At that point you have a uniform on, you become instant target for civilians. They would not know who you are siding with. At that point self preservation comes into play.

I'd side with the shaved head/sterioded out Meathead cops that get a perverse thrill terrorizing upstanding citizens because nobody played with them as kids...

Armed Citizens > 25% of the military.

^^What the British said...a man who is fighting for freedom is more fierce than a free man fighting..it'll never happen but military members would be at a disadvantage imo due to undecisiveness

I'm sorry but this is crazy.. I know that civilians out number Military.. But what the civilians forget is that when the military comes.. They aren't going to put soldiers down on the ground and hand to hand weapon for weapon.. They're coming with Apache's, Blackhawks, Air assets, missiles, etc. Stuff that civilians don't have..

But of coarse that would be if the military backs the Gov. But please don't think that they are just going to throw troops on the ground and hope for the best..

I doubt this will ever happen hahahaha.

Because our hands are literally tied behind out backs. We are not in a war, we are in a 'win the hearts and minds of haji' and that is why this has continued for so long. ****ing politicians putting their fat noses where they DO NOT belong
