Why do Americans think America is the greatest country in the world?

This is obviously a broad generalization but all of the Americans at least that I have had the displeasure of meeting have been complete dumbasses. I have only met a few but it seems that, like Alberta, you have a lot of bad apples making you guys look bad!

Explain this phenomenon for me please. I'd also like to state this isn't created as a means to bash Americans. I know that there is good and bad in every group of people. I'd just like to discuss this!

As a further note I will mention there are a lot of Canadians I can't stand and seem to think Canada is the greatest country in the world.

I understand patriotism but blind patriotism I don't.

What country (currently) has the freedoms and opportunities we as Americans have? Who even comes close?

However we are the first to help anyone out in the world, we take care of our own although we no longer have the best education I feel that we offer a pretty clear way for people who are less fortunate. I think honestly the reason he has met the bad apples is because places like New York and Jersey are so close to him and those people tend to be a bit more ornery compared to the south where life is slower.

This country is the greatest because it gives its people opportunity. Just about everyone in society has a legit chance to move as they please(socially, financially). Socialist countries tax far too much. Other countries don't protect its people. The US has given my family a chance to do well despite us coming to the US with very little money.

There's a lot wrong with the country. But if you look at every other country out there, you'll find issues as well. The US, far from perfect, but still a pretty damn good place to live.

If you are judging a nation collectively, based on a limited interaction, you are shortsighted and have a limited or warped understanding of what America has been, and is. Why is America the greatest nation? Because despite our seeming inability to mind our business at times, America has collectively set the standards of global industrialization, commerce and inguinuity. America has been a safe haven for individuals of many races and creeds for hundreds or years. America has laid the tools at the feet of millions of immigrants seeking safe harbor, prosperity and a chance at freedom through liberty, and our constitutional principles.

Despite what twisted tales may be told, the blood of Americans has been spilled across vast stretches of the earth, fighting for the freedoms of others. America has never turned her back and has always lent a hand to those in need, whether militarily or monetarily.

Sure we have our defects, sure Americans aren't perfect, sure the system is flawed on may different levels. Yet when push comes to shove, you would be hard pressed to find an American that will not stand up and fight for what is right, whether here or abroad.


Freedom, opportunity, history. The apologist can get bent. If you even have to question it, stay home.
