And my first build was a 4790k/980ti. Yeah I know most of my builds had similar parts, but I have them down to a point where I can get the most performance per dollar with a specific set of parts. As you can see on this build, I had a cheaper PSU. And it was felt with the OCs. Before I sold this one, I upgraded to a much more expensive RM PSU and I was able to pull more out of the memory and the CPU.

Next rig for 2017 will probably be a 6900K/1080ti if that ever really comes available. I want the extra PCIE Lanes to add another 1080ti for some real 4K@144hz action. And those panels have yet to be real life also, so thats a waiting game. But atleast my rig will be able to chew up just about anything I can throw at it. Also, it will be white. Man Im sick of these black cases. But I can say that the Fractal Design Define S is my favorite ever if you dont plan on using spinner drives or optical drives. Its just clean and clear with plenty of room for just about any water setup you will want. I might ditch the AIO cooler too for a cheaper Hyper 212. Those air coolers are just about as efficient as the AIOs, for a 10th of the price. And they suck up way less voltage. Samsung SSDs are only what I'll use and this time I want to try an EVGA 1000w PSU.

You might wait to see what happens with AMD's new processor, they are rumored to be beating the 6900k at half the cost, which "should" drive intel's prices down. I have an EVGA 1050 gold rated psu, little over a year and it is starting to fail, there is a decent sized thread over on overclock.net with them failing, I would stick to corsair for a PSU, also 1000W is overkill, even for 2 graphics cards, 850W should be more then plenty.

Just finished the overclock on my media server / future VR station

6700K
16GB Corsair DDR4 3000mhz
GTX 1060
H100i V2

Was able to achieve 4.7ghz at 1.32v, looks like I got a decent chip!

I'd like to have a media server for a future application, but there are size limitations. Can you post some pics of your build?

Ya I'll snap some pics tonight, it is in a micro ATX case, which is smaller then a mid tower, although I use to have my setup in a mini itx case, but the options for cpu coolers were limited, but it would be perfect for like an i3 or i5 that you don't plan on overclocking, it is about the size of a shoebox, maybe a little bigger.

Forgive me as I wasn't able to do any cable management yet, the last pic is a comparison of my mini ITX vs the micro ATX. You would probably want to go with a mini ITX, I use my media server for a lot of gaming on the big screen with an xbox one controller.

It's been quite awhile since I last put something together. I've built 5 PC's over the last 10 years or so. My wife's is beginning to have some random crashing issues, likely a memory issue. Either way it's time to upgrade. Looking for some advice on what's out there nowadays.

My current box is:
Intel i5-2500k @ 3.30GHz
ASUS P8Z68-V Pro
8gb DDR3 1333
GTX 280
I played mostly WoW and random junk on Steam, haven't upgraded in a handful of years.

Her box is mostly used for Photoshop, Lightroom, and WFH type stuff, which has:
Intel Core i7 920
Asus P6X58D
6GB RAM

Any suggestions on some good CPU's to build around these days? Before I used to pick my CPU then go for a motherboard based on the corresponding chipset. Other than graphics cards, I am pretty oblivious as to what is out these days.

As far as Intel goes, Skylake is the newest consumer chip that is out, it is a socket 1151, Kaby Lake is coming out soon but the initial reports are not looking great as far as an improvement from skylake. It really depends on what you are looking for, if you only game then an i5 will be plenty for you, the 6500 is a great i5 for the price, graphics card I would go with a GTX 1060 or 1070, both are amazing bang for the buck. Memory I always go with corsair and now same with power supplies, motherboard really depends on the case size, and usually I look at what has the best reviews for the size that I am going with.

Another option would be to wait for AMD Zen (or Ryzen). Their new processors are suppose to hit the market in early 2017 and suppose to really change the way things are priced as far as CPU's are concerned.

BF1 and Battlefront are 2 of the best optimized games on the market, amazing graphics and it doesn't take much to run them, really wish they would just share the code from the frostbite engine to make everyone happy :)

Let me just stop you right there. Your rig is not capable of even maintaining BF1 on ultra in 4K@144hz. Ask me how I know. I have the same setup - [email protected] and I have a FE 1080 OCd to the moon, and its not getting near 144hz on ultra, especially while streaming any AAA title. Sorry. But as for 1440p, thats what this rig is for. I too have the asus PG279q 1440p 165hz gsync panel, and thats not too big of a chore to keep 144/165hz in this game, on ultra. Again for 1440p, not that magical 4k you speak of.

There is only one card. The new Titan XP that could keep 4k@60 stable on just about every AAA title game. And there are others it still cant. (Maxed out graphics we are talking about). GTAV Grass on ultra running 4k can still bring Titan XPs in SLI down to their knees. I have build 7 high end gaming rigs over the last 2 years, and the 6700k/1080 is best for 1440p. 4K on ultra for everything is still not attainable. Not for anything less than $4k worth of GPUs.

My Rig -

I run everything on low. But you're right, it's 1440p, not 4k my bad.

Funny, I was just looking at the PC I built back in 2013 (Haswell core I7-4770, GTX 690 I got as a hand-me-down from my son) and thinking "it's probably time to update this dinosaur". I'm going to start with the graphics card and monitors; CPUs haven't gotten all _that_ much better yet...

Its time for me to build a new PC. Ive upgraded this one as much as possible since I built it back in 2008-09 and there isnt much more I can do now.

Originally was built with a dual core Athlon with a 512mb Geforce something video card.

I dont play games as much as I used to but this still gets around 50fps on GTA V on high settings @ 2560 x 1080.

AMD Phenom 2 X4 965 OC'd to 4GHZ
Asus M2N32SLI
8GB Ram
Radeon R9 380x 4GB
Antec 900 Case

An ssd is what i will be getting next. Anyone can recommend a good SSD. The only thing i will put on there is W10 and 2-3 games. 120GB should be enough. Looking at the Samsung Evo 840 series or higher.

Good on the GFX Card and the Ram
I would go 1TB Samsung 850 Evo SSD. It's Nice not to have to worry about space.
