Looking to upgrade me 03 cobra from a ported eaton to a whipple 2.9 or kb 2.8 or possibly 2.8 mammoth. Any recommendations out there?
Also anyone have any issues buying a used one?

What fuel are you planning to run? Unless you're going e85 I say go tvs.

I don't think I would buy used but that is just me personally. Buying a used blower (to me) is like buying a used pair of underwear. If you're going to do it, buy it from someone reputable on the forums here...

With that being said, there is a TON of information if you search topics on this. Anything from 2.2. -3.6 KB or 2.3 TVS...to the 2.3-4.0 whipple.

What are your power goals? That's the first question to ask. If it's 550-700 I would say the 2.3 tvs or 2.3 whipple. You want over 700? 2.9 whipple or 2.8 KB would take the cake. The TVS will probably be your best bet for a pump gas street car...alot of guys rallying behind that blower.

Couldn't be happier with my little tvs. Makes over 700hp on e85. Wait till you have to remove the blower to do injectors or rails or removing a valve cover. The removable elbow on the tvs is worth its weight in gold.

Agree with Roy. My valve cover removal was a glorious PIA with my 2.3 Whipple. The pass rear rail stud and blower to lower bolt in that area are wonderful exercises in practicing patience; and probably as painful as giving birth. Basically, everything from the valve covers up, comes off... and don't jack up the sequence of putting it back together. It all re-assembles very specifically. But, it can be done. I like my 2.3 despite the challenges, and it nets me 600 wheel.

All depends on your power goals. The smaller blowers are "better" for the street but lack the ability to make big power. The big blowers want a lot of boost to really shine, so pump gas (93) is not the best option. Should only run around 18psi on 93.

My tuner explained it to me like this, running under 20lbs on the big blowers is like running the eaton at 8psi. It works, but is not going to make good power. Running the eaton at 15-16psi is like running the big blowers at 21+psi. That is where they really start to shine. Problem becomes you need e85 or Torco to run that high of boost.

Point is, if your looking for pump gas (93) and around 600 rwhp, the smaller blowers are "better". "Better" is a subjective term here.

I also personally would not but a used blower. There is maintenance that needs to be done on these blowers, and you never know how someone treated it before you.

Thanks for the info guys.. I don't have e85 close by so I'm planning on doing a return style with 93. Goal is high 600s that's why I was planning on the bigger blower.

You cant go wrong with any of these options for the street car used for fun!
If your racing that different

my take on this whole power goal... is you should never really box yourself in. with my 2.9 Whipple im at 616 rwhp on 18 ibs and 93 on easy timing. I feel I have good solid numbers but some of these tvs guys are getting better numbers than me. But numbers are not everything. especially a street car

All I have to do is change the fuel, pulley, injectors and a tune and whalla more power. But this being said 616 HP is a SH** TONE for the street and I can whip just about anyones a$$ if I choose to do so. Its warm here for maybe 3 months in IL and the tires hardly ever grab.

I agree with most everything stated so far, but its not like you cant make power with a bigger blower on 93. Mine makes 630/565 on 93 & 15* of timing. This is with a 3.25" pulley and 20psi at redline, but its more like 18-19psi until 6k rpm.

As a plus when/if I ever go E85, Torco, or race fuel I will make gobs more power than a TVS.

Also, all of the TVS guys I've raced were significantly lower MPH at the track, even with the same boost & setups as mine.

Here's something to think about Malcolm went from a 2.9l whipple to a tvs and here is his thoughts from another post. Malcolm will definitely tell you that the crusher was king in the upper rpms but the broken lowers, nonremovable inlet got old. I also remember him telling me the 2.9 blower was very lazy feeling at 20psi on his stock motor.

I spun my 2.9 whipple crusher to 30 PSI with a 4 lb lower and 3.0 upper. Mid range torque on the hit finally felt good.

I then put a 2.3 TVS on with a 4 lb lower and a 2.8 upper and loan behold I had no idea what I was missing out on. Instant mid range torque just went up to a whole new level of fun.

To me it seems if instant hardcore torque is what you're after on the hit the biggest twin screw you can find is not the way to do it.

Not to mention my 2.9 setup broke about 5 or 6 lower pulley assemblies and custom welded up locking plates before I ditched it in fear of it finally taking my crank snout with it.

Here my 2.9 collection was just getting started

What about the kenne bells? A lot of whipple info so far but before I lean towards the tvs should I even consider the kennebells? Or same boat as whipple 2.9

The 2.8 is a powerhouse as well! If you are going to go that route I would get the liquid cooled. I know a guy in Morgantown West Virginia that has one of those and he's in the mid 600s on pump with plenty of room to grow...

My KB 2.8H with 3.25" upper, stock lower, full exhaust with crappy 2.5" x-pipe and flowmasters, JLT High boost intake, and 60lb injectors. 15* of timing and 93 octane.

I'd say 550 rwtq from 3,200 rpm and up is pretty stout down low.

IMO...comparing the 2.9 whipple vs the 2.8 KB (both using their standard inlet) is like comparing Pepsi to Coke. Although the Whipple almost always makes more torque...

I have a 2.8 KB and like it. I agree with everyone else it depends on your goals. Mine makes low 600s on hp and mid 500s of torque on 17 lbs of boost. Although I love the KB, I'd say if you're looking for mid range punch on 93, the TVS may be a better choice.
