while I don't d/d my car, I do drive it to the track so it sees some street miles.

when I asked a simular question after I had alredy went with the 4.10's everyone said swap them out, their too steep, blah blah blah.

bottom line after swapping the 4.10s out for 3.31's & slowing the car down at the track, the 4.10's are back in.

with a converter, things might be diffrent, same for a blower, but mild bolt on n/a, 4.10's have yelded the best results for me so far.

they are no problem on the street either.

Any track #'s comparing stock gears with the others on a NA car? Would love to see a comparison of 3:15's and 4:10's.

assuming manual trans. n.a. car, 3.55 is fine. for FI 3.31 or 3.15.

3.73 is way to short for this MT82 trans unless you want to pull stumps. it sucks for 1/4 mile, sucks for high speed.

I have had 3.73, 4.10 and now 3.55 gears and I am changing them to 3.31 if you are shifting 7300+ RPM, 27.5 or higher tire radius and you will hit the traps top of third by far best gear NA or FI in my opinion. Our Transmission gear is way to high 1st and 2nd gear.

Thats funny I have a 3.73 m6 car and I shut my car off with the speed limiter and I was in 5th gear around 6700 at 150ish , so how fast are you trying to go ?
I do agree it's a bit short , it only runs 110-112 in 4th but I've seen and heard of too many cars with similar mods, one Has 3.73 and the other either 3.55 or 3.31 and the 3.73 car always pulls faster

I have gone from 315s to 410s in a 2012 Mustang GT Convertible. Magna flow axle backs and resonators removed. It is very street able and very easy to drive. Sorry, but I do not understand all this talk about being too much of a gear and what speed it shifts at under normal driving. It is an Auto!! It shifts for you. At 75 mph on the highway it is revving 2750 rpm. Way more grunt than stock 315s. That being said , I have 285zr30/20 Nitto Invos on the rear. I will be taking it to the track as soon as I get an Intune tune from Doug at CnL Performance. I now have a FRPP ProCal tune. Also it is a daily driver in summer and going on a 1600 mile road trip to Arizona in Nov and back in April, with no worries. If anyone mentions mpg, my thought is you bought a 412 hp V8 and you are worried about gas mileage. Buy a Focus and do not worry.

With your mods you'll be hard pressed to get out of the 12's, mainly because of your 4.10's. That is the point most are trying to make. The car will be shifting into 4th before the traps. Now if you want to brag that your car is now better at roll racing...........:bored:

Are you or have you run 410s? Ever?

In these cars? No. I don't want to go slower. There's a reason the fastest N/A autos are running 3.31's. William (WBT), Chris (Mastwolf), and Jimmy Vaccaro just to name a few all run with 3.31's.

Believe me 11s are entirely possible with 410s. Besides that, this has been a good discussion. It is good to see all the different view points. I do think a lot of people are thinking manual (not pointing fingers) when they are concerned about how quick the car will be going through the gears.

This forum rocks!

I dropped .3 tenths off my et with 4.10s. I was running 12.30s and 1.95 60 ft with an o/r x, 295/45 17 mt, stock filter, 3.15s and tune. Added 4.10s and ran a 12.03 with a 1.85 60 ft. probably cold have went into 11.90s if I would have cooled the car down longer.

I average 20.5 average with a almost full bolt on 2012 5.0 a6 with 3.73's. I do not regret it one bit! I do about 70 % highway and usually drive with a heavy foot.

I hate the 3.15 gears in my A6. I will be installing 3.55's when I get the time to do so.

I have 3.55's sitting waiting to go into mine as well. First gear is fine with the 3-15's because of the 4.17 first gear but around town the other gears feel to lazy IMO.

4.10 or 3.73 have to work. There is nothing wrong with shifting into fourth in the 1/4 mile. It is not an O/D gear in the automatic. Still a ratio of 1.14 With a tune you will have a smile tattooed on your face. Faster too. Just look at the quote above. BTW, even a stick car does not hit an O/D till 5th gear.

There's nothing wrong with shifting into 4th before you cross? Explain that one.

Fourth is not an overdrive gear in an auto or manual. To follow your reasoning, put 2.25 gears in and just use 2 gears. (Powerglide). As long as we stay out of an overdrive gear before 1320 ft. We have six speeds with four usable gears in the 1/4 mile. Use them all.
