Hey guys, first time posting here, new to the forum, and new to the svt world. A couple days ago I purchased my 2010 shelby gt 500 and it has been fantastic :) While I was at the dealership, the salesman told me that every other half tank i could use regular gasoline (87/89 octane) in order to be easier on the wallet. I wanted to check here with some of you about that before trying it.

Also, I got this shelby with 45,000 miles on her, when i go in for an oil change in a couple thouand, i believe it will be time for a tune up as well. I there any specific brand of something i need to use? a certain kind of spark plug, air filter ect??? thanks for any help you can give me guys, I apreciate it!!!

Don't listen to the tech. Run 93 if you can. I honestly can't believe anyone with any form of knowledge about cars would tell you to run 87 or 89 Octane. That's just stupid advice. It ain't worth the $10.00 you might save on a fill-up to risk detonation and really doing some damage to your engine.

As far as the tune-up, if you plan to leave the car stock, just use factory Ford products. If not, and you want some extra power, call Van or BJ and they'll hook you up.

By the way, Van runs Revan Racing and BJ works for VMP tuning. Either one will get you where you want to be.

Yet, another salesman who doesn't know what he's talking about.

Keep 91/93 in it.

Good advice here. Saving a few bucks on a fill up is definitely not worth the risk.

Bj is a good guy to talk to. Very nice and knows his stuff. Never talked to Van, but everyone says he's a good guy to deal with.

Your dealer should perhaps read the manual.... Or the gas cap. 91 minimum. 93 preferred. The PCM will adapt either way.

Oil change. Make sure they put the correct amount in. It's 6.5 qts with filter. Should be about $80 at a Ford dealer. Make sure they use the correct oil. Full synthetic. They don't have bulk so ask for the 1/2 qt they can't use but you paid for.
You can get a high flow filter from our website www.vmptuning.com. Or run stock. Some guys use AiRaid. I don't have an opinion.

Change your plugs yourself, save about $200 and learn your car.

Factory spec plugs are in the manual. You can also use NGK TR6. About the same heat range. Cheap. But copper, so use anti-seize on the threads because copper doesn't like aluminum heads. Gap @ 038.
Assume you'll change plugs every 5k miles.

Stock plugs will last you a lot longer. Buy them at Rock Auto dot com and save a bunch.

There IS no "tune up", per se.
But while you're at it, buy a new in line fuel filter (not the tank filter).

Email me if you want directions on how to change it. Piece of cake.

Enjoy your car.

It's funny you said this... I posted several months back about a couple problems I had out of my service adviser. I then said that I asked for the extra 1/2 quart. It was amazing the amount of replies I got, criticizing me for asking for the leftover. Who cares what I do with it? I payed for it and I'll start a fire with it if I want!

This was all after the adviser tired telling me it took 5 quarts of 5W-20.

Criticizing? Why? I put two together and carry the spare qt. Mine doesn't use any but just in case. And yeah...I paid for it. It's not like asking to take 1/2 a beer home from the bar.

This is all awesome advice for you. Listen to this man, save you some $ at the dealer and parts store and get a little dirty with your car. Also I oly run 93 or 91 if no higher octane available

Heck if I know BJ...

Wait, so you're worried about 1/2 quart of oil in your 50K car? Are you going to have the dealer use it in your next oil change???

I was wondering why you wanted the 1/2 quart of leftover oil, too. Will you use it? If you're changing your oil/filter at the recommended intervals you're not likely going to have to add any oil in between. Will you combine them over time and give 6.5 quarts to your dealer so you only have to pay for the filter. I honestly have never heard of anyone asking the dealer for the leftover 1/2 quart. Just curious.

I work as a service advisor, not sticking up for the guy...sounds like he knows a decent amount about a car that they most likely dont see very often. I don't understand what part of your service was so terrible that you went online to complain. Seems to me like a nice guy who made a mistake, and most importantly he owned it and took good care of you. Also im confused as to why you wanted that half quart of oil, we all know you are never going to use it.

OP = (removed by moderator)
I don't care what they would have done with the old oil, also i would never want to look silly enough to complain about a half quart of oil.

awesome! thanks for all the replies guys! I figured it wouldnt be worth it. I will stick with 93 octane :)

when you guys do purchase your own stuff like motor oil, is there a certain kind you prefer? full synthetic obviously, but just curious if there was one that stands out.

I usually go for Royal Purple, cause I've run that in all my cars for the last 6 years or so, but Amsoil has a huge fanbase here with the data to back it up that it works. Really, anything full synthetic is where you need to be in regards to oil.
