Sorry to hear about that Windsorman. You seem like the type that probably had a decent nest egg, but good luck finding something else as fast as possible.

sorry to hear my friend. first thing is first, you need to lose any aspect of "I'm an IT manager you have in your mind." when things get better or you find one of those IT jobs, then by all means, use it. but you need to be prepared to shovel shit for the well being of your family. burger king. waste disposal. waiter. pizze guy. we all have hit bottom with careers before. your only option is to get back into something until you can climb back out of the hole. I wish you the best of luck. I work for the government as an IT specialist...currently deployed down in baghdad. I was willing to make the sacrifices to be here and I'm definitely glad I'm still here. bust your ass at whatever you have to to make ends meet for your family. don't be afraid to be cheap.

I take it youre a 25B (Army) or equivilant? If so then you really have no idea what IT is on the outside world. I know because I WAS a 25B.

And an IT manager is WAY more profitable and sought after than just a regular IT tech such as yourself. Im just saying the goverment/Army IT tech is not the same as the real world.

But you have a good point in one way, do what it takes. I hope this doesnt come off as too harsh. But regaurdless yeah IT is becoming harder to get into and stay in.

Well, I have an interview with a company in Plymouth, Minnesota. Anyone from that area that can tell me about the quality of life there?

im lucky to still have a job, but my days are most likely numbered as well. All my friends have been losing their jobs left and right in the masses. Ive been looking for jobs in a defensive mode only. Im currently down sizing my living expenses just to get by. I had a 26k pay cut almost 3 months ago. Im not gona lie, it hurts! Good thing I haven't been living outside of my means. To you guys with out jobs, i wish you the best of luck.

Sorry to hear of your job loss. My son was laid off from IT in February; I was laid off after 24 years last month, so we both share your pain (plus we live in that economic mecca, Michigan).

Dye your skin darker, speak with a foreign accent, live 12 to a room in a rented house; that's where all the IT jobs are going.

First they told us that it was OK to lose manufacturing; that we would survive as a "service economy:..

Now, service jobs are being outsourced, and we are being told we can survive as an "entertainment society"..

Anyone hear of "Bollywood"?

Can you flip burgers?

Bummer. Did you have a job that was easily outsourced?

No, I was a senior consultant with an IT company that got acquired by a company that sells products and extensively outsources everything from design to manufacturing. After the acquisition, our group was the most profitable part of the operation, but we all got our salaries cut 15% and they laid off 24,000 of our employees. Being senior and highly paid, I saw the writing on the wall. Luckily, I was close to retirement anyway.

I really feel for you younger guys. I lived through the recession of the 1980's and I know it's no fun. I spent a year working behind the counter at Radio Shack.

Michigan is something else. That is the difference here; if you make decent money and lose your job, you have almost no chance of finding something even close to that. :nonono::nonono: Just hoping to make it through this year...

Well, I have had a few interviews, but no luck, so far. I am officially starting to feel a sick, sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach.

I interviewed by phone with the hiring manager at United Healthcare, but it did not go very well. Not due to not knowing the job, or anything, but because I am sick as a dog and interviewed anyway. Bad decision.

I should have postponed it, but I was worried that if I called to do so that it would reflect badly on my chances. Well, hacking up a lung on a phone interview probably did not help, either.

Oh well, at least I will not miss work due to this illness, lol. A 104 F temp, sore throat, etc... means either one nasty cold, or the flu coming on.

This was not my best day ever....

Oh well, something better is bound to come along. Sooner would be better than later, though :)

Wow it breaks my heart to hear your stories. Am such a whimp that I don't think I could handle it. Ok, I 'd handle it but I'd be really depressed. But I would tell myself that the economy is bound to turn around. I believe by the end of the year it should be turn around and I pray you guys can hang on

yeah these stories scare the hell outta me lol. Luckily Im pretty sure im in a position to not have to worry about it. And in fact I interviewed for a higher paying position not too long ago. So there are still jobs out there, just have to be really good. Unfortunately, lay off around the country also make it harder to get higher paying jobs because people with more expierence are taking lower positions.

Happened to me, my dad, and my mom. It took my dad 1 year to find a job that he got last summer at Home Depot (he was a manager for a newspaper before), and took me 9 months.
Best of luck to you. :)
