"Town's Speeding Cameras are a scam" said a judge. Hmm, really?

San Diego just ruled to turn them all off as of last month. Outlying cities on the other-hand not so much. Mayor ruled pretty the same thing saying it was just causing more accidents and a scam.

There is a another side to consider (with an *).

In the end this ALL about tax dollars. The more they collect off of the speed cameras means the less they need to raise my property taxes. It all goes into the same pot.

Sure if out of state motorists are "forced" to pay my local property tax - win for me.

Plus I have an escort 9500 with speed camera and red light warnings built in!

In all seriousness I hate the damn things. But the basic underlying economic issue remains - the dollars have to come from some place.

The asterik * to my argument is that these allow a city to collect more than is needed but do they offset tax increases - no, they just spend more!

I will say that the red light camera at one of our major intersections solved the constant problem of 5-6 cars running the light after it turned red. The way I see it is don't run that red light and the city can't collect revenue.

This is a too common issue in my town as well. Frankly, I wish there were cameras on all of our traffic lights here where running reds is an issue, and at stop sign intersections where it is common for people to run right through or roll through them. I'm tired of seeing people run through a red light (recently saw one guy run through 4 SECONDS after it turned red and almost cream another car. I timed him because I saw it coming. I swear that drivers in general are becoming worse offenders because the odds are against catching them, and because they just don't care about other drivers and passengers.

Innocent drivers and their occupants deserve to be protected from these irresponsible drivers. I've complained numerous times to our police department about an intersection a mile from me that I use every day. At least 30% of cars coming down the hill on my left either roll through or don't even stop. It's the worse intersection in town. Twice I almost got hit and called the police. They said they couldn't do anything because THEY didn't witness it. But, they'd station an officer there for a week to catch drivers running the stop sign. Not! I've been here 18 years, drive to that intersection every day, and have never seen any police presence there.

So I agree that if you do what you're supposed to do (which also protects other innocent drivers) you have nothing to worry about. Unless someone else is driving your car. And that is the legality problem with the cameras. I can only hope that some better system is implemented that holds irresponsible drivers accountable when they break the law and risk injury to others. JMO.

State of WV legislature outlawed them several years ago. Our local town had just got thru putting them up at the main red lights. Now they can only use them to change the lights. BIG WASTE of taxpayers dollars.

I hear that they're common in VA, around the DC area...imagine that.

Common is an understatement. I live 15 mins outside of dc and its almost as if 1 in every 10 roads have them now. Its ridiculous. And everyone around here knows where they are so all it results in doing is people slowing down for a small 200 foot section of the road then speeding back up.

There is about a 3-4 car delay before the cars clear the lane of movement here in shithole Atlanta. Usually some young nagger in his/her grandparents impala or malibu.

:lol::lol::lol:

Hate that, light will turn yellow, then red, and you still gotta wait 5 seconds for all the tards to turn left on red cuz they moved into the intersection 'on accident'

Imagine that... traffic enforcement is nothing but a tax on the population. Who would have thought that before this informative article?

I see runners around here but they low through clueless not maliciously. The best deter ants I've see. So far are the flashing lights posted 1/8th mile before the lights and countdown timers (bigger intersections).

I got hit by one of those pieces of shit in MD on 95 in a work zone. They put them on a jeep that moves around from time to time. I did some research and found that they are operated by a private company. The same company gets paid a portion of the fine collected. That right there makes it a total scam in my book. There is a financial incentive for them to write as many tickets as possible, which will ultimately lead to shenanigans and people unfairly being fined. If a police chief offered a cash bonus every week for the cop that wrote the most tickets, people would raise hell. How is this any different?

I guess you have now have a financial incentive to not drive like an idiot in a work zone.

Those work zones are all driving to Towson. My ex girlfriend told me about them, I don't care where I'm going or what time it is, I drive slow in those areas. They have multiple signs WARNING YOU, they have those systems up, it's not like they are camouflaged in the woods. It's a stupid white jeep in front of a porta potty and a jersey barrier. Ill sacrifice the 1-2 minutes by doing 45-50 and laugh at all the assholes in Mercedes and bmw's and especially acuras doing 75+ setting off the flash.

THIS. The ones on 95 and around Towson are clearly marked with signs. Its not that hard to slow down for a few miles.

These devices serve no purpose other than to take money from the citizens and transfer it to the state. In the process there there is fraud and graft. All such devices should be outlawed.

Speeding cameras can suck it. A couple of the cities here still use them but everyone knows where they are, plus all have to have signs giving a heads up that they're there....including the mobile units. Red light cameras though, I'm all in favor of those. Phoenix (not to mention AZ as a whole) is ranked tops in the nation for red light running, you see it alllllllllll the time. It's bad enough that there's an obscene amount of uninsured driver's here, now throw in people who can't wait their turn flying into an intersection into the mix. Ugh, I f'n hate a red light runner. At least speed cameras give some wiggle room ( they don't get you unless your 11mph over), but a running a red light, that's just common sense.

This. And I will continue to drive the speed of traffic in that "work zone" that typically has zero work going on it. Not to mention it has been a work zone for the better part of a decade. Just be more vigilant of the white jeeps and oppressive over reaching governments. Leave law enforcement to law enforcement, not some for-profit that writes giant checks every year to support the campaigns of career politicians. That is what this is all about.

not at my post...
Im a cop, and I think they are nothing but a money maker for the city. I received a ticket in the mail from one in my town a few years back. Well, I had sold my truck, and the guy that bought it ran a red light before he titled the truck in his name. I didn't pay it, because it is a "civil fine" they can't prove who was driving the truck, and it wasn't me so screw it.

yep...I have gotten 2 in Houston right before they voted to do away with them. never acknowledged the fine, got a few nasty grams. I have had no issues renewing my registration or drivers license... (right on red, BS anyways)

I just wanted to update you on some info I just found out from my Ohio House Representative. Her office told me that they voted yesterday (6-26-13) on the ban of speed cameras and the ban passed in the Ohio House (61/32). It is now going to the Senate. Please take the time to call 1-800-282-0253 to find out your Ohio Senator's phone number and voice your opinion. I am pleased that the Ohio House hears its voters! Let's make sure the Ohio Senate does too!
