Unfortunately, it sounds like my throw out bearing is on its way out. There's a constant squeaking noise, it's there whether the car is stopped in neutral or rolling in gear but as soon as I push the clutch in at all, the squealing noise completely goes away. I don't feel like dropping the trans but I don't have much of a choice now. Guess I may as well try to upgrade the clutch and input shaft while I'm in there. Any recommendations on a clutch? I've heard good things about the McLeod RXT.

The land of commies and socialists!
I have no recommendations on a clutch.

I do however strongly recommend the Harbor Freight transmission jack.

I know it doesn't look like much but it's well worth the money and makes pulling and more importantly installing the trans a metric **** ton easier.

Thanks, it'll probably be a little while before I get around to doing it but I'll be sure to look into getting one of those.

If you do the dual disc make sure to do your research on the adjustable pivot ball. That trans jack will be a life saver getting the pivot ball set up correctly

The end of the crank isn’t flat so make sure you have that alignment tool centered, I didn’t. It’s extra important with the dual disc

I have an rxt and it’s been awesome on the street.

Yeah, I guess I'll replace/upgrade just about everything while I'm in there. I've never done a job like this before but my dad has some experience dropping a transmission so hopefully it goes smoothly.

if you are really into upgrading now'd be the time to do shift keys and fork pads in addition to the 26-spline input shaft and steel bearing retainer. that's literally all our t-56 needs (other than a good shifter like mgw)

twin discs are great as long as you can get them set up correctly as mentioned. very low pedal pressure. be sure to use an after market quadrant/firewall setup with any aftermarket clutch.

if you're doing it on your back then +1 on the hf trans jack. a steel alignment tool can help with a twin disc. use an output shaft plug so you don't lose fluid. use a good synthetic fluid like mobil 1.

you do not have to remove the shifter - it just barely clears. took me doing this job about 3 times before i realized this lol

good luck and have fun! in the 215k miles i've put on this car, tob's are probably the single most often-performed maintenance item i've had to do, other than oil changes and tire rotations.

@P49Y-CY's recommendation for swapping in the 26-spline input shaft is a GOOD one. Especially if you even occasionally go to the track.

Didn't realize how much stuff went into upgrading the clutch. Thanks everybody for all the tips and advice!

I had a Spec 4 with soft pedal option IIRC, or maybe a 3+....anyways,
I have a McLeod RXT in my Shelby. I like the QUIET McLeod and soft as stock option. I think all the Terminator guys reported the same thing in their cars about the McLeod

I went through this last year. Replaced stock with a RXT and the 26 spline input shaft. I figured my throw out bearing was shot as well, and it ended up being that I just needed to adjust the clutch cable. The RXT feels so much better than stock so I am still glad I went through with it. But just something to check if it can save you a 2-3k.

If you do go with it make sure and do the pilot bearing while you are in there.

Might just be dumb luck, but mine started chirping this summer.
After driving the car a bit more it actually went away and is silent now. (58k mi,oem clutch, cable, quad) I chalked it up to the car sitting for along time

That's strange. Mine hasn't went away but it'd be great if it did go away. I'm really not wanting to take the transmission out.

It’s not that bad if you have done it before. On stands, I can drop it in under an hr myself.

There is 1 bolt up top that can be a PITA. Get a 3’ extension and a universal joint. I wrap the joint in electrical tape so it’s not so floppy. Lower rear transmission mount and pull trans down, reach up the passenger side of trans near shifter with extension and you can see the bolt and get it out. This also works with the starter bolts from the front of the car. The rest is a piece of cake.
