We’re buying a new house, so I made a decision to sell a car. I love the performance of the 03 Cobra, but not enough to keep it over the Mystic. I accepted an offer from a guy in Denver. He’s coming this weekend to pick it up.

Bought a new house, so the cars went on the back burner while we renovated and got settled in.

The Mystic’s rear end was tired, so I pulled it for a refresh

Bilstein absorbers, MM LCA’s, MM TA springs, 4:10 gears, carbon shims, Ford girdle. Not pictured panhard bar and torque arm.

Pulled everything, but got stuck because I don’t have a press to replace the differential bearings. I’ll have a shop press them on for me this week.

Nice. I want to see if the panhard clears the girdle. I currently have a LPW girdle and have a MM panhard bar awaiting install.

It will. The Ford Racing girdle is actually made by TA Performance. I have the same one (albiet TA Performance branded) on my car and it clears my panhard bar with plenty of room.

I have the Ford Racing girdle and it clears on my car as well.

Had new bearings pressed on the differential and pinion. New axle bearings. Put it back together using the original shims. Backlash was good but the pinion was a little shallow. Pulled apart to have a shim added to the pinion.

you can see how the gear marking compound is wiped completely off the outer edge but remains on the inner portion of the ring gear.

Left the pinion as-is, but tightened up the backlash based on advise from Dan’s Driveline, a local shop.

I originally reused the cast shims from the factory. They advised me to used the shim pack that came with the installation kit.

Backlash with the cast shims was 0.020. Ford spec calls for 0.008-0.012. Measured the cast shims, put together a cluster of similar thickness for each side, then took a shim from one side and put it on the ring gear side. Checked backlash and it was still loose. Swapped around shims probably 5x before I found a combination that had a backlash of 0.010. Such a tedious process.

I’m not totally sure if the new pattern is ideal, but I’m going to roll with it.

Installed the axles, filled with gear oil, and installed the girdle. Ready to go back into the car.

Nice. It is tedious, but imagine how annoyed you'd be if the rest made noise after you installed it. It happened to me once, I was so pissed. Ha ha.

Back together and functioning perfectly. No gear noise.

I left the rear spring isolators out and taped the spring ends. No noise so far and glad I did. The rear end is sitting about 2” higher than I’d like. I’m sure it’ll drop slightly once the springs break in.

Didn’t install it the PHB. I’m going to get the SFC’s welded in and install the PHB and TA together.

Adjusted the Dallas Speedcal for the new gear ratio. The dip switch combo for the stock 3:27 is the first photo. It’s hard to see in the photo without looking really close.

Planned on finishing up the rear end this weekend. Went to the shop Friday to get the SFC’s welded in, so I could install the torque arm and pan hard bar.

They were having issues with another vehicle they were working on, so I had to reschedule.
