UPDATE: Picked up from the dealer yesterday after the week long excursion of re-torquing the cam caps and checking clearances. Noise was still there on this 20*F morning this morning. If its quieter, its marginal. Back to drawing board. On the lighter side, Ford Customer Care has been excellent. They call to check in with me every couple of days. They contact the dealer for constant updates. They seem to listen to what I need and they are trying to do it. I requested to bring an engineer who has experience with these motors in to listen to this. She said she is going to try to get a 5.0 specialist but all the engineers are highly trained in these cars. I am going to drive the car for now and see if I can figure out the noise. I am going to try some things and see if it helps. I will report my findings as I get them.

sounds great keep everyone updated

I haven't been down there in a while. I was hoping that once I got this car broken in, that I might be able to head down to the track a couple of times and play around with it. However, the tracks have been closed since purchase and in light of this knocking issue, I haven't really beat up on it at all. I really would like to make one of their open lapping days.

That's cool.. Yeah, I'm hesitant to put my car on the track with these issues. I don't want to be one of those people that breaks something at the track, and then has to go to Ford to try and get it warrantied. If the car was perfect, and had no problems, I wouldn't be as worried. But, seeing as though it's already making noise, I think tracking it wouldn't be the smartest move.

BTW, guys.. the noise hasn't gotten any worse, and I've learned to just keep it under 2K rpm when it's cold. As long as I do that.. I can take off in the morning with it cold, and it won't make any noise. It takes about 5 minutes of driving to get it up to temp, but, after that it's fine.

I think at this point, I'm going to focus my energy towards getting the transmission noise taken care of. If this IS a piston slap issue, it'll progressively get worse, and eventually, Ford will have to take care of it anyway.

Just checking in so I can follow this thread should anything come from Ford saying they've figured out there is a problem.

I've got 70 miles on my new '11 and heard this noise starting at 2700rpm running through about 3500rpm every morning this week. Like most others, I simply keep it under light load and low rpm's until she warms up, and all is well. At first I thought it was a rattle in the clutch area caused by certain harmonics of the drivetrain but the more I've listened for it the more I believe it's coming from the top end. I can't recreate the sound raising the rpm's in neutral, it only happens under load and when it's cold. It's definitely got me rethinking jumping into engine mods so quickly in case it is a new engine glitch that Ford figures out. Would hate to have to fight with my Ford dealer over mods to the engine.

Hmm

If you want a new motor out of the deal go drain the oil and let it run until it rattle's it's ass off then put the oil back in it and take it back to Ford. You'll get what you want then.

Engine Knock Video - Ford Mustang Forums

The knocking is most certainly coming from the a/c being the culprit. I cant begin to explain to you the BS flag i threw at the dealership only to swallow my pride in thinking i knew better not to be a sucker and not believe them.

Sure enough, the tech "cut the belt" off the car and the knocking went away, and then installed a new belt and the knocking came back at idle. the ford hotline told the dealer that "it is a normal characteristic of this high performace motor becuase there is no belt tensioner on this motor, and thus so, the a/c compressor takes all the load at idle cause the VVT to adjust and make a slight knocking noise"

I was told there is NO ISSUES to be had and its not going to hurt the motor. I too, hear it from the passanger side valve cover and also in the shift knob. I was told on another board that someone heard of ford releasing a tensioner for this motor to shut customers up who come in abou the noise.

After installing My magnaflow catback, JLT intake, and Evolution performance tune, the sound has disapeared / I dont hear it any longer. However, it still may be there becuase the cars rathe loud. Ill open the hood tommorow and check around the valve cover for you guys.

I seriously would not worry about this knock that was posted in that sound clip/ viedo. Every single 5.0 on my delers lot of 12 new 5.0's also made the same noise. that was enough + the belt coming off and not making the noise to ease my mind.

Lol, I was just going to suggest everyone buy an exhaust. These cars make no real exhaust noise from the factory so it's easy to hear EVERYTHING

I am a Lexus technician, and its funny how much these new 5.0 engines sound to our DOHC 4.6 and 5.0 v8s, I was worked on a IS-F today witch has a 5.0 vvti engine, and some of the strange noises my engine makes, that motor does to, i have heard the knocking around 3k rpms when its cold and my engine has 982miles right now ,but it seems to be getting better, so ill just wait and see on that. but i seriously think some noises we are all hearing my sound weird to us but not to the technician working on it. But remember there is a lot of moving parts, and these engines will be a little noises, that being said i love this car, and its absolute blast to drive.
that is just my 0.02 cents

I see some more misinformation brewing here.

The cold engine "piston knock" for which this thread was started is completely different than the engine ticks that many are experiencing. It was one version of those ticks for which Ford was pulling the A/C belt -- not the cold piston knock.

My E92 M3 had a very noisy engine (four cam 4.0, 8400rpm V8), it had the 'ignitor tick' these have on steroids, many of them have the issue. People on forums have had cranks replaced, main bearings, all kinds of things retorqued and yet they still make noise.

The M3s also have a 1-2 grind issue on the manual trans as well.

BMW wont do much about either and thats a 60-70K car. Not that it makes it better if you have issues with your Mustang but probably 90% of BMW owners can care less unless the car stops running because of it, same with the majority Mustang owners.

Yea, cold piston knock, the A/C belt knock and the 'ignitor tick' (valvetrain) are three different things on these cars.

GM has been fighting the same cold piston noise for 14 years across cas and truck Gen3 small blocks. While its very annoying, I have had several new GM cars and trucks that sounded like diesels when cold, time has proved no long term damage because of it.
