Let's start a real fire storm - What was the pinnacle of the Mustang nameplate?

So after seeing good points going back and forth on my C6Z thread, I got to thinking. This is a Ford-centric forum and more specifically a Mustang and SVT one. What was the peak of the Mustang? Now, by this I mean stock right from Ford. No mods because that kinda negates things a little. And when I think "pinnacle", I mean best all around which may mean it might not be the best in this or that category. Some handle better than others, some (obviously) accelerate better than others, you see where I'm going.

03-04 Cobra I remember when they came out benchmark at the time. I'd say 13-14 GT500 would be pretty damn close as well.

Being the "at the time benchmark" doesn't make something the pinnacle.

For pure speed, the trinity cars. The gt350s now a days are probably it.

I know but to me the 03-04 Cobra is what kind of re started the horsepower wars. I love the 350's but if I had the money would take a 13-14 GT500 all day long over a 350.

What Mustang has stood the test of time (13 years anyways) and is still a benchmark of performance? The 03/04 Cobra changed the game and is still used in comparisons.

I think the past few years we are living in the pinnacle. Boss 302's that could shred M3's and tear up road circuits. GT500's that have 662 HP from the factory and can do 200mph...and now a GT350 that can play with the best that Germany, Japan and even Italy throw out there. As much as I love the 03-04 Cobras, the past few years Ford has taken it to a whole new level. Now, if popularity and production numbers are the measuring sticks to be used then the late 60's will never be surpassed. Ford was selling 200k Mustangs a year. Now if they sell 40k it's a good year.

If you say "peak" its got to be a 13/14 gt500 or the new 350's...redefined the mustang in performance and blazed the trail for what we have now...the 03/04 Cobra.

I bought my 03 Cobra in Oct 2002 and I do not agree.

The finest Mustang ever was one of two possibilities. First year Shelby GT350 or 1969 Boss 427 SOHC.
