IMO the 8spd is a gimmick. You're just adding in between gears to give you more smoothness and more pep. On the highway the final drive ratio isnt any difference than a 6spd.

I suppose you don't understand the point of a CVT, or the concept of BSFC either, do you?

actually i have a great understanding of brake specific fuel consumption. Which isn't effected by transmission ratio so what was your point?

my point was having 5spds vs 10spds doesnt give you 2x the benefit. In between ratios only serve the purpose making the trans feel "smoother." You cant reduce the overall final drive ratio down further than what necessary rpm and corresponding power output for the vehicle to maintain speed.

If you want to talk efficiency ideally you would have a motor that is perfectly matched to the load and speed requirements of the vehicle such that it could be direct driven. And also having the motor's output shaft directly on center of the wheel axis thus negating losses in bevel gearing.

And it only took them a decade and a half to correct their mistake. Now were right back to 302ci again. Brilliant!

I was disappointed to the see the OD didnt get taller with the 10spd. Im not sure what RPM the taller geared trucks see at highway speeds, I think I have 3.73s or something like that in the tow package and its around 2k, Id find it hard to believe it couldnt cruise at lower RPMs than that

A few weeks ago I decided on buying a 2014 ecoboost fx2 that had 20k miles absolutely love it, sunroof heated cooled seats,HID smoked headlights every option you could imagine. I test drove a number of different 2017's it's just my opinion but I HATED how the 2017 stx's drove, handled, felt, hated the cloth manual seats.
When I found this fx2 and drove it, it was night and day difference very happy with it. Here's a pic from last week. Since then I added the license plate cover delete, shorty antenna, smoked rain guards, smoked mirror blinkers( second pic) and also added a jlt oil separator

One use of a CVT is to keep the engine in the RPM range that optimizes BSFC. If you can't see how more gears gets you closer to the behavior of a CVT, I don't know what to tell you.

I find amusement daily in the fact that you call yourself an engineer.

Well good luck with it man. Hope its problem free. The TSB for stretched chains goes thru oct10 2014. T/C tsb is thru 15's. You should have factory powertrain warranty so at least it won't cost you.
I do agree about the new trucks though. I don't see me getting rid of my 14 for a new one, 10 speed or not.

He clearly knows more than the ford/Chevy engineers that co developed the 10speed so you must be wrong

I only read the first page of this thread and missed most of the pissing matches. But, i personally think the 3.5 ecoboost is a great engine and would no think twice about getting it over the 5.0 if the trim/options of the truck were what you wanted. I have a 2010 gmc sierra denali with 6.2 tuned with EFIlive by blackbear tuning for 93 octane. Its a very stout truck with a lot of grunt and sounds great, but.... my dad's 2015 3.5 ecoboost with a simple 87 octane tune would mop the floor with my truck, plain and simple. So dont let the "its a V6" mentality defer you from a pick-up you like just because it has the ecoboost.

My '13 F-150 with 46,000 miles is having the very common cam phaser/timing chain issue. The dealer won't fix it without being to replicate it, and it only makes the sound on cold start when it feels like it.

I'll be trading it in before the warranty is up in January.

Phaser and chain noise due to blown gaskets on the tensioners was a 5.4 3v issue. That engine was done in f 150 since 2010. What engine is in your 13?

6spd vs 10spd was the argument... Which i pointed out there was minimal real world benefits to be had. I never said there wasn't any benefit to CVT which i think we both agree is not a direct comparison to a fixed ratios torque converter auto.

If you want to go down the rabbit hole of transmission losses, gear ratios and BSFC start another thread and i'll be glad to oblige.

2018 f150 10 spd vs 2017 f150 both equipped with coyote there is only 1mpg difference in the EPA ratings. Alot of that comes from going from 10.5 compression to 12:1, start stop and dual fuel system with direct injection.

City mpg ratings for the 5.0 F-150 went up 13-14% on 2wd models. 6-7% on 4x4. Highway went up 4% or so. Combined went up 5-6%.

cant compare city ratings.. 2018 has auto stop which physically cuts the engine off while you sit at the traffic light. 2017 does not have this feature for 5.0.

The fact is the comparison is flawed no matter how you slice it. Compression bump, DI+PI, more hp, new transmission and auto stop start all play a role.

agreed..

a much better comparison would be 2017 2.7l ecoboost f150 vs 2018 since both have start/stop and direct injection. These are direct from EPA website

2017 f150 2.7l, 2wd with 6spd trans = 22 combined, 19 city and 26 highway
2018 f150 2.7l, 2wd w/ 10spd trans = 22 combined, 20 city and 26 highway

So there appears to be a 1mpg gain for city that is directly explained by the trans.

Whats interesting is the combined ratings are unchanged. Which means the real world benefit is less than the round off error or .44mpg max. That's only a 2% benefit for adding 4 ratios. They also have the exact same figure for average fuel cost of $1,600.

The TSB is for the primary chain stretching so far it doesn't pick up the trigger wheel on the cam when expected, and sets codes. If you have a noise at start up, it has nothing to do with this particular tsb, but may be the tensioner coming apart as they have been updated along with a new guide.
