I make about double what I did 5-6 years ago, but it seems like everyone else does too.

Still live in the same house which we will have paid off in about 14 months (tripling up on payments for the last two years). Still driving my paid for 2016 vehicle.

I piss away a little bit of money modding cars, don't really go to the bar since COVID (that used to be $200+ a week), stopped Starbucks and buying lunch at work, don't really go anywhere, finally bought a new $600 laptop after having the same one since 2017 (and traded that one in for $300).

Been putting 10% in my 401k for the last ten years but still don't feel like I have nearly enough. Have a pretty decent amount in savings etc.

Starbucks

It's never been cheap...but...

A long time ago (2008?) a coffee was $2.90 and a cookie or danish was $1.90

I could have went to 7-11 for a 89 cent coffee and a $1 pack of hostess donuts back then

Anyway... I went there the last time this year and it was $5.50 and $3.50

Nine bucks....plus tax. I got a $25 gift card for taking some survey at work.

I realized in about 15 years I'll be telling one of my kids how much it cost in the old days, by then a coffee will be twelve dollars and a cookie will be seven!

Most of that crowd can't cover a emergency 1000 bill but they always have the newer car or iPhone and clothes lol
Which is part is why they don't have anything in savings. Pretty much their entire paycheck goes to necessities and "things" they can't really afford but "must have".

Yes MOST people manage their finances just as you describe. There are however others who get themselves into massive debt with loans and credit cards.

I know someone who bought a $700,000 home and now has a mortgage that eats up nearly 70% of his income!

Talk about house poor. Why people buy shit they can't actually afford is beyond me. Just because the bank will loan you that money doesn't mean you should take it.

Exactly this and is what bends most people over in the long run. When my wife got out of the Navy and was a full time student/part time worker the bank told her to buy something better as they had approved her for $55k back in 2007. She was a freakin part time Gymnastics coach using her GI Bill for ****s sake.

ive been good about saving, have not been aggressive enough about investing to avoid losing value to inflation.

started using ynab a little bit to get a better handle on necessary vs discretionary spending and good lord too much spent at restaurants

I thought the same thing but here my ass is.

Genuinely surprised and now I’m playing catchup financially.
