Car shopping for my wife since a deer totaled out her volvo xc90, we went to the local ford dealer to look at a used nautilis and aviator, and im just not going to flipping pay $70k plus 6% interest for one of those turds. As we were leaving, I told the dealer to humor me and let me drive a mach-e. To be honest, i was genuinely surprised at how nice the car was. I know that almost every mustang fan absolutely HATES it, purely because its called a "mustang" but if you can get past that, then its actually a descent car. ford is now offering 0% financing which makes it an attractive buy. I have heard horror stories on tesla owners saying that they cannot go to a dealer to get maintenance, they have to book an online appointment and want 8 flippin weeks for someone to come out there and look at the car. Its nice that any ford can work on the car if needed.

Also, the only driving my wife and I do is to and from my kids daycare every day. which is roughly 17-20 miles each direction. so not having a gas bill, vs putting premium in my wifes xc90.

but here is where I am a little irritated. We test drove the GT variant over the weekend, then decided to come back to the dealer today to make an offer. Which all but lasted maybe 8 minutes total. These goddamn dealers are so stuck on pandemic profits, that they are unwilling to budge on anything. They have 3 GT's and I decided to make an offer on the GT Performance one. it is listed for 54K. I told them I would be willing to pay $50k out the door. CarEdge.com shows the car has been on the lot 242 days. so its clearly not selling. The salesmen laghed at me and said he would ask his boss. I told him, dont come back with $400 off or some shit, I will only pay $50k and thats it. Take it or leave it, and enjoy you rmusem piece.

so then the manger walks in. shows me some stupid paper how they paid $70k for it and discounted it to $54k.

Im like dude... its still NOT SELLING. $50k is a reasonable offer. He then tried to tell me that hes already discounting it $18k for me. and i was like ummm no. Ford told you lower the price and offer 0%. Now that all mach-e's across the entire nation are 0%....AND only 11 GT's have sold in the last 45 days in the entire US. Then they tried to tell me they sold 2 this week. I laught my ass off and said thats a lie. Do you honestly expect me to believe that this ford dealership, in one of the most remote parts of washington state, is responsible for 25% of the US sales. hahahaha. the only way out to this dealer is a 2 hour drive from seattle on a 1 lane highway. After that dealer, the road is desolate for the next 3 hours of driving with no towns. so no...thats a lie.

so 1) am i wrong for not paying full price? and 2) do you think i was being a dick for being a very well educated buyer? I was able to see how long the car was sitting, which they didnt like, and all of their 11 mach-e's were over 220 days on the lot, and/or are they just being dicks? Shit, at least come back to me with like $1500 off. but not even a penny? jesus christ? i should just call ever for dealership on the west coast to see who would take my deal. I bet one of them would...

Two responses come to my mind when considering your legitimate question:

Response No. 1: My Father taught me in my youth to never argue with three classes of people: religious zealots; teenagers; and salespersons. Why? Because you will never have a rational debate. As such, I would not have any hope for a rationale debate with the dealership in question.

Response No. 2: The Ford dealer in question is living in world of illusion. You are not going to persuade him otherwise. It is a big country, if you want a Mach E, then consider contacting other dealerships across the country with your offer --- perhaps via email to cut down the time you are conducting your search. Like many things in life, you only need to find one.

If you want an EV, make sure that you understand what you’re getting into WRT costs, upcoming potential taxes and new car registration fees. I still dont like the track record of garage fires.

The question is do you need an EV or will a lesser priced car/SUV suffice?

Also, **** that dealer, find one online that will meet your offered price.

If you can't find a dealer willing to accept your $50K limit on a GT Performance Mach-E, then you'll have to decide just how much you'd really like one, because the only option left would be a used Mach-E or another SUV in your price range. Doesn't sound like you have a lot of time to be patient in your search for a replacement. Why not contact Nick and see if he can help you get a "best deal".

i like the way the Mach E looks, but i know if i bought one, within three years it'll be thrown in the trash like an old iphone or some catastrophic recall will make it undrivable. that goes for just about every EV on the market.

I don't like the Mach E for a bunch of reasons, but I can understand your motives. That said, if it's not selling brand new at $54K and they won't sell it at $50k... your resale value on it would be horrible! You will lose almost all of that money if you ever want to trade it in. If you're never going to be worried about it's value later and don't mind knowing that $50k is sunk in that car then go for it.

I've driven mine for 2.5 years now and it drives like new. My advice is to get a used Performance Edition for mid to high thirties. The MagneRide is worth it on these.

Honestly I wouldn't mind buying a used Acura RDX, or CRV, but the wife really liked the mach e and got attached pretty quickly. We live in a remote town, and there are about 11 chargers in town here. But our daily driving literally consist of taking our kid to daycare and that is it. If we didnt have daycare, we would probably be some serious hermit crabs that never left the house (except for groceries), or the occasional weekend road trip. so the EV kind of makes sense since we wouldnt have a gas bill. Electricity is only .07 cents KWH here, so its not that bad of a price.

i dunno, ill try to convince my wife to go gas. but it wouldnt be the end of the world if we went EV. I just dont want a $500 a month loan payment.

Shit, at least come back to me with like $1500 off. but not even a penny? jesus christ? i should just call ever for dealership on the west coast to see who would take my deal. I bet one of them would...

So a few things...

1. Send me or post the VIN of the vehicle they had listed at $54k and you offered $50k on.
2. Does their $54k price include anything other than the vehicle?
3. What deems your $50k offer as reasonable? Not saying it isn't...just curious on what data you used to determine that.
4. Ford doesn't tell anyone to lower prices. Ford did do price cuts, so they re-invoiced all the current vehicles in inventory and/or added VIN specific rebates to effectively lower the price.
5. If the dealer is going to lie to you, why do business with them at any dollar amount?
6. You're not wrong for deciding not to pay their $54k, but they're not wrong for not accepting your $50k offer. It's a free market. Call the next store and maybe they would be more willing to deal.
7. The jury is out on how educated of a buyer you are. I see a lot of buyers who think they have it all figured out, but don't, and are unwilling to hear anything they don't want to. Not sure if that's you or not, but we'll get there once I get some more information.
8. Dealers don't/shouldn't care if you know how long their inventory has been on the lot. I could give a rat's ass.
9. They didn't come back to you with a $1500 off offer, because you instructed the salesman not to come back with an offer. lol Not sure why this is a sticking point for you, as they followed your instruction.
10. There might be someone out there that will take your $50k offer, and once you send me the VIN on the vehicle, I'll be able to break down the cost/profit of it and show you exactly where all the numbers fall.

Again, feel free to either post the VIN, link to the car, or PM me.

Nick

Insurance on EVs is insane vs. ICE vehicles.

Lease don't buy if you are going to get one. 50k is not a deal given the bath you will take on resale.

The mach e is a nasty turd. Almost as bad as a 2012 "Shelby" gt350. Almost.

The only way an EV makes sense is if your work allows you to charge for free. If so -- then an EV makes sense as a commuter. At that point, Im buying a new $19k Chevy Bolt, driving the wheels off it as a commuter, then proceed to throw in the trash after 10 years and call it a day.
