lol everyone thinking they will fail

You have to remember a lot of much shittier companies were purchased when stock prices/production/issues arose. Tesla if they dip will get bought out/bought into it. They will survive. They will get streamlined on a production level, and make a lot of people look stupid.
Most people will mark an F in the loss column if they are purchased as neither they or our government or Musk could keep them independent.

My neighbor as a Model X and a Model S. They are fantastic cars, and I have completely changed my tune on how I feel about them. They are made in America, and fast as hell on wheels.
First he gets rid of the Mustang for a Jeep. And now a fan of electric cars?

The one thing that I can't wrap my head around with auto enthusiasts hating Tesla is the innovation. Outside of Tesla, there have been very few electric car companies that have had anything close to an exciting electric car.

Tesla, while the looks can be generic, has been producing electric cars for a specific subset of people that want a good looking, decent performing electric car. Love them or hate them, electric cars are the future. Fight it all you want, they will be here. Any company that can push us in the direction of performance oriented electric cars is good in my book.

Without Tesla, we will be stuck with bullshit Honda Insights and BMW i3's.

I think they make pretty nice vehicles.

The things I have against them:
1.) Musk has overpromised and underdelivered his entire tenure.
2.) Tesla has never produced nor sold what they say they have.
3.) Tesla (and other manufacturers) falsify sales and registrations in order to 'look good'.
4.) Musk needs to quit acting like he understands the car industry, and just go back to solar panels and what not.
5.) Tesla's main following are blind sheep.

I wouldn't ever own a GM, because of the bailout..and then GM recording record profits and not having to pay back a dime of our tax payer money. Similar to Tesla. With the declining EV tax credits and more manufacturers coming to market with competitive EV cars, Tesla Motors will go away.

EDIT: When I think of Elon and how he runs his company, I swear it's extremely comparable to how John Hennessey ran/runs his.

electric is going to boom in CA and other states. Because our dumb **** ass governor added gas tax, now we pay close to $5 a gallon. Tesla isn't going anywhere. Also, now is a good time to BUY the stock, they are at 52 week low, in a cranking market. Government will not let Tesla fail. Let us revisit this in late 2020.

For the employees' sake, I hope not. I know a lot of people that were poached by Tesla from '11 to '15, even worked with them a few times.

I've been in Europe for the last 3 months and I've seen way more Tesla's here than I've seen in the states since they came out.
There's even a very small dealership, which I've never seen in the states, in Amsterdam.
The way I see, it's an American company building badass electric cars and I wish them the very best. Like others have said, electric cars are here to stay, and that includes Tesla.

I'll give you a hint of a pretty bad ass electric car Fisker Karma. But again they couldn't sustain themselves and so are on the dust pile of history. Again until super charging and range is doubled ( about 400 miles on a full charge) Electric will always be a gimmick and a dead end outside of cities. As one trip to Cleveland and back would be white knuckles for me as I would be real close to the 200 mile range that most Teslas have. 85 miles up 85 miles back. which doesn't leave much room to get where I need to go in Cleveland.

But I could always knock on someones door ask if I could spend the night and so recharge if I don't make it.

Henrik Fisker designed the BMW Z8 and went to Ford in '01 and was Aston Martin's design director when they started to hit their designs out of the park with the DB9 and was the designer of the Vantage as well.
His cars were much more beautiful than the Teslas IMO
The owner of the company I work for has a P90 S and one of his sons has a 3.
When he takes it to Colorado they have to stop in Hays for over an hour on a supercharger and then only travel at 70mph the entire way to get the range to make it to Castle Rock or Denver. Taking my Escape I get there an hour earlier (just doing 5mph over), and save 2 hours on the 16hr total trip.

Great points by both of you.

That said, if your daily commute is 150 miles or less per day, it ABSOLUTELY makes sense to buy a Tesla, whether its a used S or a newer Model 3. The insurance increase is very minimal (around a $20 a month increase here in socal-depending on your record, of course) and the gas prices have soared to nearly $5 a gallon thanks to our POS governor's new gas tax that passed.

Tesla will not die IMO. The guy is a genius. Musk is selling an idea, not a car. This is something no other company I think is doing. These cars will be most popular in cities where a lot more people are substancially more money than the rest, such as sillicon valley, LA, and New York, compared to the rest of the US. We are already seeing these cars in the 50s-70s, probably even cheaper, that's not that much at all for those who have money. It's the future.

I'm about to move further out of town (Houston) so my commute is going from 15 miles one way to 55. After seeing the older S60s and S85s dropping near $30k it has me thinking that maybe one of these might be a good commuter versus my 16 mpg FX4. I'm trying to research the platform's reliability and projected life of the batteries but holy crap, those Tesla forums are full of nerd-speak. My degree is in Aeronautics, not electrical engineering, I just want to know if the damn things will last a while.

The way the company controls parts and ability for shops to repair makes it a complete nonstarter for me. Well, that and I live in MN, LOL. Bitter cold and EV do not play well together.

Take a listen to Joe Rogans podcast Yesterday with a guy who buys totaled Tesla’s and restores them. He built one model S out of two Tesla’s for $30k.

I can't help but think there is a lot of scared butt hurt in this thread.

Tesla could fold tomorrow, but electric cars are here to stay, and I opine that THIS is what bothers most of us. Modifying our gas guzzlers will become a forgotten talent, as the electric cars run circles around our beasts and gap them off the line. Increasing performance will be all about software programing and not about bolting on loud, smelly, oily parts.

Sucks, but true. Can't stop progress.

Moving the carbon inputs/outputs around is not progress. Hydrogen fuel cells would be progress.

maybe true, but I will NEVER turn in my v8 or v10. They can suck my old wrinkly ball sack .

also think Tesla is going to be a big big game changer of the future auto market
