my dad just picked up his first harley two weeks ago

6njvup

my brother-in-law has a lightly modded nightster.

I asked my dad if he was going to have to give up cruising with his mustang club buddies, and he said most of the guys have bikes too, so they can do both!

Harley has a strategy when it comes the Sportster. They consider it two sales when you buy one. You will use the Sportster for a week and then come back and buy a real Harley the next week, thus two sales. V-rods look cool, but don't even think about trying to ride one for more than a couple hours continuously.Ralph

I dont post much over here anymore... but ill throw in my 2 cents as it might actually be useful to ya.

ive never ridden before..... always wanted a harley but figured I wasnt established enough to afford one. or at least a nice one.

one day I was dicking off on the internets, and came across a pic of a nightser. couple minutes of research and a couple 'woah' and 'nooo shit?' moments and within10 minutes id already sold myself

check em out man... sickest looking stock harley out there other than the night rod special (pictured above) its lowered (lowest seat height of any harley ever... like 25 inches) different shocks/ swingarm/ seat/ tank/ everythings blacked out etc.

the colors are hot too.... but for me BLACK is the ONLY color. ive seen some orange/black and silver/black ones running around but they dont hold a candle in person to the all black.

heres the nighster linkhttp://www.harley-davidson.com/wcm/Content/Pages/2008_Motorcycles/2008_Motorcycles.jsp?locale=en_US

ive got these pipes coming for mine... in chrome. will be wrapped in black header wrap for the old scholl blacked out look. also coming are power commander air cleaner mustang seat and progressive shocks drag bars etc. Sould keep me content for another couple weeks lol (mod bug is as bad in bkes as cars lol)

The Nightster is great looking bike. There is nothing wrong with the smaller Harleys. I know several people that have 88 or 96 cube Harleys that have bought Sportsters just to run around town. If I could afford another one I would probably buy the orange and black Nightster.

I went to the Harley dealer tonight and they had a Nightster there with mini-apes. They wanted about 13k for it. I really like the Nightster, but I wouldn't want to modify anything like that. I don't know why. I really want to customize a bike, and to buy a bike thats almost already where I want it seems like cheating. Nice bike though.

OP, You don't want a 1200 Sporster trust me i had one when i was younger. You won't like it. Most Harley guys consider the 883 Hugger and the 1200 a girls entry level bike not to mention the ride alot more harsh than your bigger bikes.

Also depends on how tall you are as the foot pegs are litteraly right down instead of being in front like the bigger bikes. I say save your money like I did and buy a Softail Nightrain

+1.....It takes one hell of alot of $$$$ to make a Sportster a Badazz bike
and not a women/girls bike....then you could have bought something
better.

883 is super tiny!:uh oh:

does your 650 have pretty much ZERO clutch feel? My mom has an 04 Vstar 650 and damnit, its hard fro me to even ride. The clutch is so (non existent) when compared to ANYTHING I have ever ridden.

yeah, the friction zone on them is non-existent. There is a guy on ebay though that always has a clutch adjustment kit for sale that is supposed to help a lot.

Yeah I got the Silverado edition with every bell and whistle available on the smaller CC bikes. Windscreen, bags, sissy seat. Honestly don't know how much past a year I am gonna keep this bike. I would like a somewhat larger CC bike and not sacrifice gas mileage. The gearing for this thing is just too low. I feel like the bike is really working on the freeway and it scares me a little. Another gear and I would probably keep it for a long time just because I could ride it on the freeway.

I plan to get a bigger bike relatively soon as well. But, to be honest, it will probably be another Yamaha. I am looking at the Raider. It is a 1900 and stickers at around $13K. The Harley Rocker (which is similar) is about $17.5

Harley is 100% Marketing Genius, The bikes are classics. Like literally. There is just no reason to charge as much as they do for their Motorcycles. The V-Rod is as close as they have to anything Modern. And because of their lack of modernization the other corporations are gaining more market share. There was a time not long ago you had to get on a waiting list or lottery to get one. Now you can purchase one off the showroom floor. People are starting to realize you can have a-lot more bike for the money. (Part of the reason I got off my FXR) The classic lines of the bikes is something only HD can do but people are starting to look elsewhere because their sick of paying out big bucks for something that is brand new but 2 decades back tech wise. We need a modern Big Cube around 1400cc Harley putting down close to 200 at the rear.

hahahaa

we ride to KC from the east coast every year for the vrod rally with no issues. I have made quite a few 250+ mile days with no hesitation (other than my ADHD driving me crazy). If you want to ride a couch then you shouldnt be on anything but a couch. All these bikes are comfortable to whomever they fit, maybe you just didnt fit on a vrod.

Man by a evo or a shovel head you can find them all day long for the high end of money you looking to spend. Not at dealers buy from a private party, dealers want to much for used bikes. I know many people that have picked up sporty's because of money reasons and they all ended up selling them within a year because of different reasons, to get a big twin instead.

I didn't talk to any sales people. There was a tag hanging on the bars that said about $12,800.

Too bad those jap bikes won't have the harley sound.

But new Harleys suck, EFI? Rubberized mounts? Bah!

Your that guy at the light that blips the throttle every 2 seconds I bet. I love pulling up next to those types at the stop light and blipping my angle cut slash cuts from My Jap twin right at their half shelled wearing head. 2in Dia slash cuts angled up is quite loud from a little 1000cc twin.

That is why I got a Yamaha Vstar 1100. Its faster, gets better mpg, and was cheaper then a Harley. There isn't really a reason for me to go Harley at all anymore.

unless you really just like the sound :dw:

the closest any metric came to sounding like a harley is a roadstar.. it has a single pin crank just like HD uses and has a very similar sound. You CAN tell the difference but it does have a very similar lope sound
