I agree with the comments that many live well beyond their means but that doesn’t mean everyone does.

People don't make enough money but want nice stuff and over spend early in life, then waste their entire 30s and 40s paying off stupid financial choices. This keeps them from being able to retire and having to work until theyre 75 or die.

This isn't to say that I am exempt from some of this behavior, because I've done my fair share don't get me wrong. I'm just old enough now to know that I was an idiot and should have saved more money SOONER.

For me, it's all about being able to retire some day relatively soon (55 would be nice!) and still do the things I enjoy doing today.

I, personally, have 0 respect for some turd that lives with mom just so he can drive a 2019 8" lifted duramax Silverado with color matched wheels that cost $95k.

It's these people's lack of personal responsibility that has this entire country falling into permanent oblivion.

Different thread topic though.

Preach it brother!!!

I am that idiot though
I spent up a lot of money on trucks and im just now gotten to were im in a good place financially. Ive taken care of myself since i was 17 so nobody can say i lived off my folks.

Working at a high dollar hotel I see tons of 100k trucks to the point that to see a 3/4 ton that is not lifted in 35s and up looks out of the ordinary for me.

Ive worked hard and lost everything in the past and will finally be done with school within the next year and a half making great money by my standards 70k+ a year.

How old are you? Does your company offer a 401k match?

If you are younger, your money will work harder for you than the 40+ year old like me. Biggest advise I give to people where I work is get into your 401k AT LEAST enough to get the free company match. It is literally thousands of dollars one is missing out on if not.

36. I make most my money off of tips right now so my 401k is garbage. My credit union has options to start a retirement fund. I already have 12 years of state time i will be rolling over when i go back to the state for work.

The plan is to have state retirement and a 401 or some other retirement plan going

Bingo, one would have to be a lunatic to pass up company 401K matching!

Good man. Just do everything you can to get the max benefit a 401 program offers. Remember... EVERYTHING you contribute comes right off the top come tax time.

So if you were to max out at $18k, and you make $70k, in the eyes of the IRS you only made $52k that year. It could actually drop you a complete tax bracket and put a few thousand $$ in your pocket at tax time.

Gotta do it!

You'd be shocked how many young people (20s and early 30s) at my work contribute 0%. I basically beg them to do it, but they wont.

I ask the same question about these $70-$80k trucks I see on the road. I don't know how people afford them but I see a lot of them.

Serious, more and more I've been looking around just scratching my head at how people are able to afford things.

I live in BS Midwest. In my region the average income is $34,900 (yes, $35k). National average is $59,000. I make roughly $85k. I have a $1k mortgage that will be paid off in 8 years. Tons of new apartments construction, with rent ranging from $1000 (1bd) to $2,500 per month (3bd + garage).

Average New car is $30k OTD, I see new trucks all over (40-50k OTD) and a God damn based Mustang GT now starts at $36k and shoots up well into the mid-50's. Those are $1,000+ car payments.

I just keep looking around going, How the living hell can people buy and afford this crap. I'd be eating Ramen if I had a $1k car payment or had to pay $2k a month rent.

This....it blows me away.

An okay-optioned f150 will net you around 65k.

How?

Why?!

No wife or twins. I worked 2 jobs at one time to pay for my truck and motorcycle.

Idk.. now that I have someone else I have more money lol. Having someone else pay for half of expenses is nice. Gives me damn near an extra $10k a year back in my pocket

Though now it's weird. I have her and I don't even care about the cars. I care more about doing up the house and vacations. I would love to sell both these cars and get something nice, but I see no point. Right now the only " toy" I would get would be a side by side or a sand buggy.

Right now with the new house though, cars have taken a back seat.

In 2004 i was working 2 jobs and bought a single cab short bed silverado for 20k. I spent 7000$ in stereo equipment, wheels, tint and exhaust. It turned out better than the better optioned trucks on the streets.

Don’t judge a book by its cover

This is becoming like the “is the Cobra still the beast it was” thread.

Every so often I talk with my wife about what the OP is asking. Most of you have already touched on a few things that I see.

I think that auto loans going up to 7 years is part of it and might cause a financial bubble. Lots of people are waiting longer to move out of their parents’ home and aren’t putting money away for retirement

A few years ago my wife and I went camping near Tampa, Florida and went to a local drag race track. We saw an overwhelming amount of lifted diesel trucks with speakers and rims. These things must have been about $80,000 or so. All of the owners appeared to be 25 years old or under.

I think 401k’s are virtually pointless. My company does 1% match. That’s absolute horse shit.

I wonder it a lot too, but it's pretty simple when you think about it. A lot of people aren't saving at all or enough for retirement. They live paycheck to paycheck and are in serious debt. The banks are willing to finance the auto loans for 100% of their income and just keep extending the loan terms out. They advertise monthly payments over total cost so much that a lot of people probably don't even know what they really pay. All they care about is their monthly payment.
