Could be a bad fill up then? I've been running Ethanol in our 2010 GT500 which uses the same hose and filter. Other than swapping out the first element shortly after we made the conversion the filters elements after that never looked like that.

Jared

I don't know, maybe. Ill give it another month of use and ill pull it out and see how it looks. Ill inspect the inside of the lines tomorrow and see if there is any residue.

The gas station im getting e85 from was built brand new a few months ago, its a Turnpike service plaza. I just put a brand new filter today after seeing the old one. Ill give it about a month and take it back out and see how it looks

thats disturbing, then. I'm going to check mine asap. What color is the hose coming out of the pump at the e85 station? The pump I use has a bright yellow goodyear hose thats exclusively for e85. gasoline grade is on the other side of the pump and is black

To run E-85 you should run the PTFE Teflon coated hose because the Ethanol will begin to breakdown the hose. OP you didnt mention which hose your running, Im just curious unless I missed it.

Hasn't this already been tested that the black goo is not the fuel lines?
Teflon or not it doesn't matter.

Let me see if I can find the thread where someone tested it. If I remember right it comes from somewhere before we even pump it into the tank.

I have no idea where this was 1st post but gives you an idea.
This is talking about the goo that ends up at he end of the injector but its the same as what gums up the filters.

"Alright, I finished my analysis of this stuff, and my finding is very unexpected. I think it will probably surprise everyone else as well. This doesn't appear to be forming because ethanol is "such a good solvent" but because ethanol is a poor solvent. I suppose it should have been obvious when others said that it "washes right off with gasoline". Why would something that ethanol is selectively dissolving wash off with gasoline? If this were something in rubber or from our fuel tanks, wouldn't that imply that gasoline would dissolve it even more readily than E85?

Alright, so what is this stuff? It is a appears to be a very large petroleum based hydrocarbon, similar to Vaseline. There isn't a single hetero-atom in the molecule (ie, the entire molecule is comprised of hydrogens and carbons), but the molecule is very large. It is also completely aliphatic (ie, only single bonds in the structure - no double or triple bonds). Where did it come from? I can only think of two different sources it could be coming from. It is either something that is mixed in with the rubber hoses that is meant to dissolve away in the gasoline, or it is a trace impurity in the 15% gasoline that is in E85 that wasn't separated during the fractional distillation process. Because it is such a large molecule, it wouldn't be very soluble in ethanol and could easily crash out of solution at the injector."

"Well, here is what I did just so everyone is clear. I filled a 40mL vial with E85 and blew it dry with nitrogen gas and mild heating (about 150*F). After there was no fuel left, I placed it under high vacuum to remove any remaining volatiles for about an hour. I was left with a clear sticky residue that smelled bad - like nasty frying oil. I dissolved this sample in the NMR solvent and analyzed it and it IS the same goo that was on the injector. There was smaller amounts of some other stuff in it as well, but the same peaks I saw in the black goo were in this residue. The black goo IS coming from the E85. It isn't naturally black, though. I suspect it just has soot mixed in with it that is giving it the color.

So the next challenge is figuring out why is this crap in our fuel, and if it is in everyone's fuel (particularly people who aren't having this problem)."

I myself bought into the whole "Swapping Over To E85 Will Clean The Residue Out Of Your Tank" BS so I bought extra filters.

That proved 100% wrong in my case!

Here is my filter after 2 weeks. (Which I swapped anyway)

Here is the one I swapped 1 1/2 Years later!

Keep in mind these were regular old 10 micron PAPER filters. Nothing fancy.

This reside has to either come from the station, line, or non-compatible pumps IMO.

I just do not believe its coming from quality -an lines used in these cars. I think is coming from somewhere way before we pump it.

I honestly think it is the stations where people fill up. My fuel filter looked horrible after a few months. A buddy of mine was running E85 too, checked his filter and his was fine (Same time frame, same day we checked our filters). We both used different stations, about 10-15miles apart.

I think its weird how some of you guys are having these issues. I have used 5 different E85 pumps in norcal. Non of which ever gave me any issue. In CA we get summer blend all year long I'm not sure if these guys having issues are from stations that mix blends during the year..the other issue maybe that there E85 sits in there pumps very long periods of time before there stations get refills.

I live in nebraska. During the summer I see 95% ethanol and winter blend is 70%.

Was the inside of your tank clean when you did the fuel upgrades? sediment in the bottom of the tank? That filter is quite dirty for only 3 months use...
