How does a lower gear put more strain on the turbo???? Or did you mean that a higher gear will put more load on the turbo??? And I have a long 2.66 1st gear, I get 47-48 mph in 1st gear with the 3.73's and a short 25.7 inch tire.

But how many times did he have to rebuild it?

dave from my understanding, aj freshened up the transmission once. Nothing broke though. He had it with the kb mammoth and now with the 62's. not sure if aj has an account on here, he can chime in.

I modeled my car after yours ^

i am glad I can be an inspiration :-D

Sorry but I beg to differ. The 4R can handle up to 1600hp with the right components. If you want a Th400 with OD your looking at about $7000. Not cost effective at all.

I never once said anything about putting an OD on a TH400 nor am I comparing cost with a 4R vs a TH400 with OD.

I am fully aware that a 4R can handle 1600hp. However you are going to be freshening up that transmission atleast once a year if not twice depending on how much you race drive it. If its a garage queen that gets limped around on the weekends with a big dyno sheet, then yes it will last forever. If its being raced and abused its going to need to come out every season to be freshened. The TH400 is a much more reliable trans vs the 4R. Thats a fact. Yes it doesnt have OD, but who cares? If you are making 1600hp who cares about OD? I drove my car EVERYWHERE on the highway. 28" tall drag radial with 3.27s and it cruised great @ 75-80mph without an issue.

Exactly. Its going to need to be freshened up frequently. For the amount AJ uses his car I am sure that trans comes out atleast once a season.

You make a great point with the gearing/tire height. Never really thought of that, makes me re-consider getting a auto without OD.

For the street 325/40-18 M&H Drag Radials. Track 28x10.5 MT ET Drag with Stiff sidewall

Was that on a 10.5 wheel or a 11?

Turbo's are driven by exhaust gases. The 3.27's will put more load on the engine for a longer amount of time than 3.73's, therefore creating more exhaust gases to drive the impeller.

I've seen AJ post about trying to sell his 4r and going to a TH400 before so there must be something to that...

what kind of rpm did you turn at 70-80mph with the 3.27/28"tire/th400 combo?
looking at going with a combo just like yours, but want to be able to travel long distances also.

Thanks,
John

At 62mph I am at about 2,500 RPM. The amount of converter slip plays into the rpm.

If im building a car that will see the track a lot and I mean a lot, I would throw a TH400 in the car without thinking twice. But for someone like me, a car that see's more street use than track and not abusing the crap out of it, the 4r would be my choice. aj's car with the 4r is nasty. He still wants me to go for a ride in it but I refuse to go inside. On 12-14lbs that car is scary. Maybe next time I see him at mustang magic ill go for a ride, but I will tell him to put it on very low boost just to feel.

I have been in joeys mustang. mustang magics tuner. He has a twin turbo setup in his mustang 4v swap with a 4r. He rolls around on 10-12lbs on the street and says he barely uses the high boost button lol. lays waste with 10lbs
