* AHHH...someone bought mark reed's old 00 car. wow.
Who? This car was partially built by Jed Welder and then redone to its current form by me.

* AIX Outlaw is a California only class, right? Where are going to race this car?
Correct but Ive spoken to Corey, and A47 is interested in expanding the class to other regions. Im running AIX officially as NASA sees it but Im built to the Outlaw rules.

* NASA Nationals. Were two real AIX cars at 2011 NASA Nationals. The rest is field filler and they race for 3rd spot on the podium. You arent going to win the first couple of times anyway.
Nationals haul and the time off from work isnt doable, Id like to and I dont expect to win with the level of talent in NASA. Thats why Im coming over to race against the drivers here, I like to say "steel sharpens steel."

* what about your car is NOT American Iron legal?
Not much, Im a little over on HP/weight rules, Hankook C51 tires. I couldve redyno'd chopped HP and bought RA-1s but I wouldnt have gotten that all done before this weekend. I fully expect the experienced AI drivers to kick my ass.

1. wpbcobra appears to have bought the 00 car. its in his new avatar. see?
2. i am a goodyear driver and that is why i run aix. i could run st2 but we have a better aix race field in nasa southeast than st2 right now. at nationals i would run st2. i dont expect to win either.
3. yes, the experienced drivers will kick your ass. thats why you need experience.
4. just be careful about letting agent 47 effect your choices. outlaw is not a nasa class and if they intend to try and destroy nasa american iron with their hybrid rules package and class, there will be a fight over it and it will kill that kind of racing on a national basis.

agent 47 is in this to make money. its business. be careful

Sorry I couldnt tell who you were talking to.

Rob,
Thank you for the advice, I hear you on the being careful part. Im drawn to the outlaw ruleset because my car fits it so well. Im not changing the car to fit into the rule set so as far as it goes with NASA I have an AIX car.

Im really wanting to help build the new NASA central region.

ok...you said your car needs a mild hp to weight adjustment to be legal. how much hp and what's the weight? you have that small adjustment and tires?

i also dont understand how you are helping grow the new nasa region by working outside of their class structure and with a group who's intent is to destroy that class structure.

ST2 is 8.7 to 1 weight to horsepower ratio. The rules are pretty open and allow many things like aero (wing and splitter), shocks (coilovers, penske's, moton's, koni's, etc), brakes (brembo, ap, alcon, wilwood, etc) among other things. Its a good catch all class.

Rob and I have discussed a Super Touring East Coast Championship... which would include 4-5 of the better tracks in the East Regions. We were going to do it this year, but with me being out and rebuilding my car and fewer entries this year... may try to give it a shot next year.

A few guys run AIX / AI and ST2 when one class has more entires than the other. It's good to have options like that.

i just googled up those rules. its the anti abs crowd!!! you can run hoosier r6's at 295 wide against 275 wide toyos for the same penalty as having the ford racing abs. thats a hoot.

i would take the tires all day and twice on sunday.

Wow.

The outlaw class isnt destroying AI its bringing in cars to race AIX that otherwise wouldnt be there. The outlaw rules set is still within AIX rules and it doesnt change the AIX rules.

I cant say what agent47s motives are but hopefully theyre genuine and they just want people to race and have fun.

I couldnt find a somewhat local buyer for my near new Hankooks, ****ing SCCA cancelled the last event of the season last year and left me hanging with 1 race old tires. I didnt really want to chop HP because I like my car the way it is. 372 rwhp in a car that weighs 3100# with me in it is fun.

There seems to be a lot of red tape with AI as far as dyno certs and meeting min weight. By running AIX that all goes out the window and I can have fun racing and not worry if Im not going to weigh enough after the race.

maybe you are a little naive. there are no ai cars in outlaw land because?

iirc this aix outlaw group was created out of an anti ford racing/anti abs feeling that grew in recent years. i mean...what does outlaw mean? they didnt like the nasa american iron game and they created their own game. aix is an open rules class and so, nasa cant stop them, but if their intent is to expand the series, their intent is not pro nasa.

my experience is that hoosier r6's, goodyear rs r compound, hankooks, kumho v710's and bfg r1's are all 1.5 to 2.0 seconds a lap depending on the track faster than a toyo. if can then expand that out from 275 to 295 with the added horsepower the tire advantage is going to be easily over 2 seconds a lap, heading toward 3.

i see no evidence that abs brakes are worth a full second, much less 3.

i have an fr500c. i am among the evil, i guess. the boogie man is in my engine bay. ABS. there are decals on my car and on my driver's uniform that say "FORD RACING"
Everytime i strap into my ride i hear the darth vader theme in my head....HAHA

ok...enough. have fun, my friend. keep the black on the track

Rob,
Honestly, I never read into it that far. I have a race car thats outside the AI rules but is far from what a true AIX car is. Then I see a video on nasaforums.com and I go read their rules, my car fits. Cool, a class that my car fits in, sounds good to me. Thats it, nothing less nothing more. Oh and I still have ABS too. ;-)

Thanks for the info and I think my car is just going to be an underpowered NASA AIX car. I like American Iron as a race group and I dont want to see it go away.

just a little insight. as a rookie all you should be worried about is logging laps and having fun. i hit the reset button on my racing and i am essentially having another rookie season.
we get 5 to 7 aix cars for each nasa se race. i have a 2nd, 2 3rds, and a 5th. i am shooting for 3rd in the points.

i am just trying to finish all the laps and keep the fenders straight. maybe next year race harder.

I know Corey and he doesn't seem to do it just for the money. He really like to race and sponsors ryan walton. There was some talk about griswald car being untouchable so what's the use. Last year at national he lapped st1 cars in the race. Corey started aix outlaw to bring more people in the series. He even put money up for people to run the first few races with. Corey's main business is not agent 47.

my understanding is that the ai grid is dead there now. yes griswold isnt worth racing and no one does. it would make sense to restrict aix to extreme rather than unlimited. but who am i?

as you can see there is nothing extreme about my car. its straight grand am gs trim right now

meanwhile my anti abs comments stand. there is not a chance in the world that abs is an equal advantage to hoosiers over toyos and to 295's over 275's. its a laugh.

with ford racing abs, 14" brakes and goodyear tires. i wouldnt be competitive with them anyway.

Nice car, I am building my car but there is no american iron in Phoenix so mine does not really fit anywhere, currently would be eligible for CMC but I run with ASA and their rules are basically open with just power and weight maximums and minimums. I may be looking into a rear wing, where did you get yours? Are the $200 ones from Cruisin Concepts or Cervini's functional?

I think Rob and Michael mentioned it, but why not look into ST2 or STR2 rules and see where you fit?

I am keeping my C5Z06 in PTA for the remainder of 2012 and for Nationals, but it will most likely be an ST2 car after this season.

Michael,

NOT A WORD to the rest of the C5 Mafia, LOL!!!

 Sounds like a plan... we all just need to jump into the ST2 pool and be done with it! I just hope I can have my car ready by February or March next year. :bash:

The R wing is functional, mines made by Cervinis. I bought it years ago when they were only $150. Why not bolt it on?

Car is almost ready, only have to run one more line for the fire bottle, slap on the tires and drop her off the jackstands.

Car ran great. Side exhaust is rediculously loud, loudest car there by a lot. Mufflers are in order, Magnapacks possibly.

Car is going in a different direction, going to get my dyno cert and race AI. I got some help in the tire dept from a fellow AI racer.

Really hard racing this weekend. Im beat.

Edit. I got pushed out wide and picked up some cones on the pit out blend line, ground them to bits with my left front. Car was smoking badly as the cones were being chewed up, oil pressure never waivered I kept glancing at my guages so I kept my foot in it. I didnt get black flagged, rode the curbing hard on a right hander and they popped out from under the car.
Afterwards my crew chief said smoke was rolling out of the left fender vent. I replied well atleast now we know those damn vents work!
