99 mustang Cobra

Newest setup 29,000 miles to 94,000 miles on vehicle (and still going)
1. 03/04 4V Cobra/Mach/Marauder/Aviator heads
2. Procharger P1SC
3. 04 Lincoln Aviator Longblock - 10.3:1 compression
4. 255 Walbro, 42lb green injectors, 90MM LMAF (blow thru)
5. 03/04 Cobra/Mach/Marauder/Aviator cams
6. 99 Cobra intake (green dot, post-recall) with BBK twin 65mm TB (not port matched)
7. Procharger 3 core intercooler / procharger standard butterfly recirc valve, vented to atmosphere
8. 03 Cobra stock manifolds (to fit the D shaped exhaust ports in the 03/04 heads), BBK 2.5" O/R X Pipe, Mac 2.5" Cat Back
9. Stock crank pulley, 3.7" pulley, 6 rib 114.5" belt
10. 5 PSI @ 3K, 10PSI @ 6K, 11ish PSI @ 6500 redline (belt slip, tensioner flex are issues)
11. Morpheus Performance 4" power pipe, K&N filter behind fog light opening
12. 489 RWHP / 442 TQ on the "let's see what it can do" tune. 450/418 on the "let's not destroy the stock internals" tune... Basically pulled timing and added fuel after 4500 RPM. With either tune, it made almost the same power and torque up to 4500 (within about 10hp/10tq), but it flattens out with the more conservative tune.

Old setup - 15,000 miles to 29,000 miles on vehicle

1. Stock 99 cobra heads
2. Procharger P1SC
3. Stock 99 cobra longblock, 9.85:1 compression
4. 255 Walbro, 42lb green injectors, 90MM LMAF (blow thru)
5. Stock 99 cobra cams
6. 99 Cobra intake (green dot, post-recall) with stock twin 57mm TB
7. Procharger 3 core intercooler / procharger standard butterfly recirc valve, vented to atmosphere
8. 99 cobra stock manifolds, BBK 2.5" O/R X Pipe, Mac 2.5" Cat Back
9. Stock crank pulley, 3.9" pulley, 6 rib 114.5" belt
10. 12-13 PSI @ 6900 RPM
11. Morpheus Performance 4" power pipe, K&N filter behind fog light opening
12. 510 RWHP / 431 TQ

A few things to point out: with the 03/04 cobra heads and cams as opposed to the 99/01 heads/cams, the new engine makes peak torque 1500 rpm lower in the powerband. Although both setups made within 20 PEAK power with about the same amount of boost and pulley size, the high compression Aviator longblock with the later 03/04 heads made as much as 125 more HP than the earlier setup at 3250RPM. The new setup makes much more power and torque with better throttle response, especially below 4K. But the earlier setup with the 99 heads/cams had less off boost/low boost power but had a wilder top end and a higher redline (6900 vs 6500). At 6500, both motors made roughly the same power, it was only above 6500 where the old 99 motor made the extra 20 HP.

Old 99 setup has a 3.9" pulley, made as much as 13psi, new 04 aviator setup has a 3.7" pulley with 11psi max boost. The main reason the new 04 motor made less peak boost (even with a smaller pulley) is because of the better flowing heads and cams... More airflow. But the new 04 motor has a lower redline, so there was 400 less rpm to spin the blower than the 99 motor. I also think I'm getting a little belt slip with the slightly smaller pulley, plus I havent changed my tensioner in a while.

Long story short, the new high compression, 03/04 cobra-headed aviator longblock is much more fun to drive on the street, with much more power lower in the powerband. I don't have to spin it up to higher rpm's to get in the powerband to have a little fun. As a result of having to work this engine less, it's lasted much longer. Plus, the 450 HP street tune might have something to do with it. Even though it's now restricted to 450 peak HP, it still makes all the same power and torque down low, which is where it stays most of the time anyway.

^^ Damn now that is some killer power!!!

thanks! its funny you say that, me and the guy who made my aluminum piping(Hans at Deans Performance) were talking about how with all the setups ive done on this motor, 5 to be exact lol, that it always seems to make really good power, even with conservative tuning. My timing on that run was like 17 deg. IIRC.
