XDs 9mm owner here, but my buddy has a Shield 9. They both shoot well. I prefer the XDs because of a slightly thicker grip and the grip safety with ambi mag release (Lefty).
As others have suggested, I'd say get the 9mm over the .40. Put some Hornaday Critical Duty or Defense and you'll stop the bad guy.
Holster options are endless. I have a Crossbreed Supertuck. I like it a lot. Conceals well and is comfortable enough when wearing it all
day.
Before buying the Shield, I'd suggest trying it and an XDs out on the range. If you still like the Shield, great! You'll save some dough too on the Shield. Springfield does like their guns.
