Man in jetpack races real jet aircraft - video | World news | guardian.co.uk

Swiss pilot Yves Rossy flies a spectacular formation flight alongside two Albatross jets over the Swiss Alps. His custom-built jet suit weighs 54kg and can travel at speeds in excess of 125mph. Rossy used to fly fighter jets for the Swiss air force and in 2006 became the first and only man in the history of aviation to fly with a jet-propelled wing.

I would love to do that. I think everyone at some point wished they could fly, this man is doing just that.

It would be cool to be able to launch that thing off of your back yard, fly around and then land on your own. Now that would be something i would love to buy.

Ive done shittons of research on this lately.

Hes using (4) off shelf Jet-Cat motors making around 50lbs thrust each. They each consume 16oz of fuel per minute. He only carries about a gallon of fuel inside the apparatus. Any more adds weight which would require more thrust/engines which would require more fuel to stay aloft.

Until they make a more efficient engine for him (or me, wink wink) its limited to being a novelty.

The problem with a standing launch is not that much thrust to weight ratio, and if something happens at low altitude you cant use the parachute and you might be high enough to be seriously hurt or killed.i think the chopper drop also helps him get enough airspeed and lift quick enough to give him more flight time and less time accelerating.

120mph isnt a bad clip when you figure you can get to your destination in a straight and direct line; not taking roads that dont always go in the direction you need them to.

But its the closest thing to human freeform flight yet. Dude is a badass and he has inspired me to get my project off the ground.

Flying is tied with racing for me, as far as thrills go. I'd love to fly this thing. As for saving for your pilot's license, awesome! I just finished mine up this summer.

@ 125mph? :dw:

Too slow... Haha.
