Caterpillar, BNSF and Chevron sign MOU for hydrogen locomotive demonstration

CAT +0.40%Dec. 14, 2021 10:23 AM ET1 Comment
  • A new memorandum of understanding (MOU) reached between Progress Rail, a Caterpillar (NYSE:CAT) company, BNSF Railway Company and Chevron U.S.A. (NYSE:CVX) aims to advance the demonstration of a locomotive powered by hydrogen fuel cells.
  • The proposed project is aimed at validating the feasibility and performance of hydrogen fuel as a viable alternative to traditional fuels in line-haul rail.
  • As part of the MOU, the companies are working toward reaching definitive deals on a demonstration with three primary objectives. Progress Rail plans to design and develop a prototype hydrogen fuel cell locomotive for line-haul rail; Chevron plans to develop the fueling concept and infrastructure to support this application; the prototype hydrogen fuel cell locomotive will be demonstrated on BNSF's lines for a mutually agreed upon period of time.
  • The project is subject to the negotiation of definitive agreements. Additional details, including when and where the initial pilot will take place, will be revealed once the deals are reached.

What advantage would HFC have over LNG (that's already in use by Florida Central Rail).

LNG is still a hydrocarbon and burning it gives off CO2. A hydrogen fuel cell only gives off water. Making the hydrogen is where all the pollution will come from.

No problem. Wind and solar farms turn sea water into hydrogen for your train, oxygen for your vaccinated Covid victims and sea salt for your ribs and salads. No bad stuff.

You just have to figure out how to get the windmills and solar panels to mine and assemble themselves without producing hydrocarbons.

How hard could that be?

You mean the train makes plant food? Guess we don't have to worry about the rain forest anymore.

Was able to snag a bottle of Blackened whiskey signed by Metallica and the distiller while I was out there for the 40th stuff. The other 2 are limited release cask strength, damned near 60%

Brian Marshall doesn’t like whisky, but he’s certainly profited from the drink. Marshall, from Kettering, U.K., recently sold his collection of 4,000 miniature whisky bottles for about $39,726 at an online auction on Sunday, according to SWNS.

Marshall has been collecting mini bottles of whisky – primarily Scotch – since the 1980s from all over the world including the U.S., Iraq, Uruguay and Australia, SWNS reported.

Marshall told SWNS he started his hobby when a coworker, who was collecting full-size bottles of whisky, recommended he collect mini ones. "It took on a life of its own because I started planning my holidays in Scotland around it," Marshall said.

Think this kid has a future? Being able to see over any defensive line has to be an advantage?

How many of these can be spackled on the exiting grid? Seems like lower cost solution for areas with existing power lines.

Great.
- Who pays for them?
- Wonder how long it'll take until their stolen?
- Take up street parking.
- Want one in front of your house?

I'll stop.
