Here's a picture of Bob or Big Orange Bitch as we called him. It's a remote controlled sub or a Mine Neutralization Vechicle (MNV). Use them on Minesweepers and on Minehunters before they got decommed. Has the ability to either put a charge on a moored mine or drop off an 80lb bomblet near a mine. Fun Times :)

We stopped in Bahrain and there was a minesweeper ported there. My buddies and I wanted to check it out, but never got the chance.

Yeah I have 4 trips of 3 years on the Sweeps in Bahrain. USS Ardent was the one and in the states it was usually USS Chief.

I worked in our aircraft carrier print shop, and had access to a nice light table used for touching up film negatives used for making printer plates. So I learned early on to forge duty cards, leave papers, etc. I was VERY good at it. I'd put the leave paperwork over a paper signed by an officer, and traced his signature. Then I would use the forged leave papers to get off the ship on a Friday afternoon, go to LAX airport and catch a flight to Bradley Airport in CT. And then return Sunday night. Never got caught.

I tell ya, a Carrier and a Sweep are hella different! I went TAD with some juniors to the Enterprise in Yorktown just before I retired to teach the AO's how to build mines. It took me what seemed as hours to get from berthing to the area that had the bomb table. When I first got there I noticed an explosive tail section under the table not in a can and not grounded.....that had to go. LOL

LOL. Yeah, it was a BIG ship. I remember it took a bit of time to become familiar with all the compartments, levels and passageways. I absolutely loved my 2 years aboard that carrier. Great learning experience and a lot of fun.

As this started as a military service post I want to veer off topic a little and ask for your opinions on Vietnam Veterans day.
My question is,
How can people that never served in Vietnam be included if they were only in the military during the time of the conflict?
Is this a version of a participation trophy?
Honestly when I first heard of this I thought it was interesting. Now, not so much.

To the men and women that actually served in Vietnam I would like to say,
Welcome Home.

Like in many conflicts there is a "you were in at the time of conflict" and "you were in theater". My dad did two years in Vietnam, he came back....physically.

One of my favorite memories from while i was in, was walking into the hanger when we got back from the middle east, I was guidon bearer for my company which meant i was one of the first through the door. as we marched in and the families saw us, i will never forget the feeling of that blast of air from them screaming in excitement.

One of my trips back from the Middle East had us land in Houston, TX and then bus the rest of the way home to Ingleside, TX. About a 3 hour ride, 5 by bus...lol. We stopped in Victoria on this bus ride home at a Burger King. Burger King fed about 80 of us for free. Then about 20 Freedom Riders escorted us the rest of the way home. When we got back to base there were about 50 more Freedom Riders lining the gate entrance. That was Awesome! The last week before you leave sure has you walking on air though......hot air....but air.

I'm in the same situation. I'm considered a war vet for the Persian Gulf War even though I was never there but I was in the military at the time it happened.

Might have seen this gem before. One of our 2000lb Mk65 Mines, I wasn't at the shop but I have friends that were. Worked on them a million times. Can't recall what the story was but I think it had something to do with the brakes. High order explosives hence the yellow dot but it would take more than a crash to set it off. This way could never do it, but I wouldn't want to try it.

I was in the Navy and my favorite part was getting out.

HAHA.. not really. Favorite part are the people you meet along the way.

Some of my best friends are guys I stood watch with for 12 hours a night while TAD to security.

Glar I got out but i do miss it sometimes.

I'm thankful everyday I stayed in. With the cost of healthcare and my retirement covers my $2100 house payment and my $600 truck payment.

I'm very familiar with this picture being I've been involved in the "Munitions" business since '81. This is a pretty old picture to be honest, what year and location do you claim this accident occurred?

This was taken in Okinawa, Japan in Mag 43439. I want to say the date was 10-15 years ago but not sure. I did contact a few individuals to see. One that was involved in taking it out of that skid and putting it into another. I've been stationed with several people that were at the Mine shop at the time.

PS One friend said it was 02/03
