And yes, wife working = us not being completely screwed. But I still can't even begin to fathom what Monday morning 7 AM is going to feel like when I wake up and realize I have nowhere to go...

Feels weird for a couple months. Pretty soon you'll be waking up at 11 wondering why people have jobs.

Sorry to hear brother. At least you saw the writing on the wall and saved some cash. Good luck on your job hunt and its a good opportunity to get some projects done around the house.

Sorry to hear man.

With an engineering degree, maybe look at Biomedical Engineering Tech? I know there are jobs in that with more opportunities than individuals.

My cousin does government work in engineering for the military. I can see what he knows about opportunities.

I wouldn't recommend waiting long before starting your search. Understand most of us need a breather to reboot, but generally it seems that the longer you are out the harder it is go get back in. Most people like to help others who are trying hard to help themselves, as opposed to someone who appears to be half-hearted in their efforts. Whatever you do, try to keep busy with constructive work. Will really help you mental state and general outlook. I did volunteer work for the Salvation Army in the past when I lost a job. Met some very good people along the way and really helps put your own situation in perspective. Don't know why you would necessarily avoid contract work unless there is a lot of travel, etc. Often leads to permanent positions and in the meantime you can write off a lot of expenses.

Good luck with your efforts!

Not many in your company or overall? There have been AT LEAST over 300k so far. That's just the major companies that file things. Not the independents, small companies, steel industry, smaller service companies, etc. I'd guess it's closer to 400k jobs lost so far.

I'm in IT for GE Oil & Gas. We have restructuring dollars from our parent organization (Corporate) to pay for certain things, but not for salaries not directly related to restructuring. That fund it the only thing keeping me employed right now. Everything I've done since I moved to O&G is to save the company money by creating efficiencies. I think the guys designing the artificial lift, drilling, or pipeline equipment will be more impacted than I am. But I don't see this turning around for my business for years to come. I'm waiting for a few bonuses to clear, then I'm out of here.

If you want to stay in Houston, I see many openings (operations, not sure about engineering) posted by Lyondell pretty frequently. I briefly worked for them at the Channelview facility last year before going back to the military full time, but I have a friend that constantly posts their openings on Facebook. Hell a friend of mine just went through their hiring process and I'm pretty sure he'll be offered a job.

Sorry to hear about the layoff, but keep your head up. My sister got laid off from a job she didn't really care for years ago, took a flyer on a new company in town and now loves her job.

LOL. Hopefully I won't have to know what it feels like after a couple of months!

Lots of good websites out there for leads.
Linkdn works well enough to find head hunters.

Oh yeah. I had my resume and linkedin updated as soon as the market started to turn for this very reason.

Yeah not til 2018 or so

Mhm. No bueno.

Sorry to hear brother. At least you saw the writing on the wall and saved some cash. Good luck on your job hunt and its a good opportunity to get some projects done around the house.

Thanks and yes. My wife and I both knew that our futures were volatile with the industries were in. I studied aerospace so I knew that was an up and down market and knew o&g would be the same. Got plenty to do around the house and obviously I'll be using my days for job apps.

Sorry to hear man.

Biomed tech would be cool but I don't think I'm qualified after this much time focused on industrial equipment and manufacturing. Obviously not something I would rule out if the opportunity arose though!

Oh, no way. I can hardly imagine being off for a week or two, much less an indeterminate amount of time. My wife's got some coworkers (she's an engineering consultant in wind energy but her company also does O&G) who said they would take a look at my resume and see if they can get me doing some contract stuff in the meantime. I've also got a couple of certifications I can kill some time with - pneumatics, etc (already got hydraulics specialist).

I'm in IT for GE Oil & Gas. We have restructuring dollars from our parent organization (Corporate) to pay for certain things, but not for salaries not directly related to restructuring. Nice. Yeah not a good time to be in. If not just about seeing so many friends going through the bad shit.

I'll likely be looking in Houston, Seattle and Austin. With my wife and I both being engineers, trying to get us both in the same city creates an additional challenge but luckily her company is fairly flexible. Unfortunately it'd be nice to get rid of our house before the market really tanks here.

Yep. Thanks! Hopefully this is just forcing a new path for me as opposed to me choosing. I'm hoping it'll lead to greener pastures. Its going to get a little rough, I'm sure, but I'm optimistic that I'll come out on the other side in a better spot with some new challenges to pursue.

Damn, I knew gas prices were dropping, but I didn't know the industry was canning so many people. I hope everything works out for everyone.

The 2018 number I threw out was just " speculation" from what I hear with people I know in the industry.

They never speculated $29bbl as of yesterday morning. So take it with a grain of salt.

I just do " know" it'll definitely take over a year to repair itself

~ by some on SVTP you'll be a taker. Good luck getting back on your feet.

Anyone who thinks accepting UC is being a taker is nothing but a robot ditto head. UC is an insurance. The premiums are taken out of every paycheck you received. OP, don't feel the least bit bad about collecting UC. No more than you would if you totaled your car and took the insurance check. Best of luck to you.

this has got to be one of the most stupid statements I have seen here in the last few months at least. may be years. UC is there to help for this very situation. When laid off there is nothing wrong with dipping into the UC funds. that is not "taking". Taking is sitting out on welfare when you are capable of working but choose not to.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune, however remember, if you apply for and receive UC you will be a taker.

So much this. There are so many people who have no idea.....

Good luck, OP. Tough industry to be in right now.

Alberta and specifically Calgary have really been hit hard.
Just read an article that over 18,000 Alberta oil and gas sector employees have been laid off in the 2015 year.
The downtown core is noticeably quieter.

My cousin worked for Penn West, and 400 of the 500 employees in her office were sacked in one morning. :(
I'm still employed as our company is quite diverse.

You do understand that employers pay into a state fund for every employee on the payroll to pay for unemployment compensation. Which is NOT matched by the state it is 100% employer money.

When it comes to extended benefits (tax money) every state is different, it depends on that states unemployment rate weather they are offering it or not.

As far as federal extended benefits (tax money) I don't think uncle Sam is giving that out anymore. They did for a few years following the great recession of 2008.

So, why wouldn't you take your former employer's money? As far as I'm concerned you earned it. You had to work to receive it.

They've been slowly laying-off people over at the steel mill, Granite City Steel in Granite City, IL just across the river from St. Louis. Soon it will be idle. China has been "dumping" cheap steel in the U.S. We can thank our politicians for that!

Yeah I've read Canada as a whole is going to be in bad shape due to the downturn.

Yeah, the whole point of the "Termination Agreement" I signed was saying that they would not contest anyone filing for unemployment that got laid off.

Just as an update, my wife and I decided to move forward on getting a few little updates done to the house and then put it up for sale hopefully in the next couple weeks. Then we're fairly set on moving to Seattle where her group is headquartered and hopefully find me a job up there as we've got a few connections through friends and her co-workers that are happy to try to help (we're both engineers luckily so our connections are useful to both of us).
