Free microscopic particles of solid material. Google, so far, gave me dust. The word is 5 characters long. This is part of my brother's extra credit. It's a crossword puzzle for a Process Technology class at San Jac. Here is a clue:

First letter is I.
Third letter is S.

Changing 3 across to 'acids' works because 'dusts' will fit 4 down. Appreciate it guys.
