Friends, I need your help understanding what may have happened here, and what I should try to do about it to either fix it only and/or ensure that it doesn't happen again. IOW, what broke & how do i fix it... :cryying:

I was having an awesome time at Texas Motor Speedway yesterday gaining quite a bit of respect for our cars when the unspeakable happened. Something gave way & one of the personnal there said it sounded like a rod-bearing.

I'm off to do some research regarding "rod-bearings", but how extensive might the damage be. No smoke out the rear, nothing leaking out of the engine. I think all the damage is self-contained. I've sent it to a local shop to have them diagnose the problem.

... like an internal failure.
actually thought it might be a very bad exhaust leak.
or clutch problem, but i discounted those pretty quick.

Sorry to hear about this. I would not be surprised if it is a failure located around number 7 or 8 cylinder and very likely could be a wrist pin based upon the no smoke comments.

If it is in your bottom end

Kill the cylinders one at a time with the car idling. When the knock quiets..... Blame the cylinder that is killed .

Check your harmonic ballencer as it could have come loose...

Is this becomming a trend? I have heard of a few failures lately, bummer :( I generally have total confidence in this engine given it's beefy internals and good reputation to go along with it, but I wonder if we should be concerned?

And it could be something as simple as a partially thrown/damaged blower belt banging around under the hood. That sounds pretty bad too.

Need a little more info.

not at my post...
94SVT is dead nuts on...The stock oiling system in these cars is not meant for road racing at sustained high rpms. I think you'd at the very least want some billet oil pump gears(SHM makes them for the 03). They are known break in the mod motors.

Coleman - I wish you luck and your cobra a speedy recovery man.

By the video, It sounds like your low speed fuel pump went bad.

My Lightning sounded just like that.

Keep us posted, good luck.

What is a low speed fuel pump? We have dual fuel pumps that feed in parallel right?

BEATNGU, if so, might that be the fault of the KB boost-a-pump?
how does one test a fuel pump to see if there was any damage?

Lightnings have low speed fuel pumps, Cobras might not. Regaurdless, your car acted the same as my truck did.

They just ran a code for the pump I believe. No idiot light can on.

It's a low cost simple fix, have your shop check it out before you tear anything down.

Should be under warranty, w/ all my mods they warrantied mine.
But I know the people real well.

Let me know

I can totally believe that is a fuel pump failure -- and this is why I would never have run one. I'm not saying that KB makes a bad product, but look what it does, it dumps more voltage into the fuel pump and I think basically maxes out the duty cycle of the pump. IF that is what it is, I hope there was no real bad damage to the engine.... ouch.

Best of luck, please keep us informed.

John
