There's always Cherokee classics (XJ's), around $8k will get you an excellent example.

That's what I'd be shopping for if I were the OP.

I'll be joining the Jeep crowd next year, although I want an '07-'08 Grand Cherokee CRD with the Mercedes diesel and trans. I've seen guys on the forums getting ~28 mpg highway with GDE tune, dpf and egr delete. 7400 lb towing capacity too! Bad thing is they're hard to find since they only put the diesel in those two years.

I love my 03 Rubicon. It will go anywhere. And it has gone up in value since I bought it, which is nice. 130k miles on the original clutch even.
