FYI,

Saw a lot of guys reporting issues with the Cardone reman 43mm calipers. Points to a potential reman issue with Cardone. Had a few folks chime in on the
"79-04 Mustang HPDE & Autocross" FB group that experienced caliper lockup with them. One guy locked up on track, another guy had one lock up after setting parking brake. Have heard of a few other examples as well.

Something you might want to keep an eye out for if you are running a cardone reman.

Have not heard of issues with the standard 38mm calipers.
Not just cardone (though they are generally the worst) but I've had problems with centric and nugeon remans on various vehicles in the shop.

I won't even put reman calipers on the rear of Mazda anymore. Every time I did they leak.

I have heard of leaking calipers with Cardone and Autozone but not locked up.

Honestly this makes nervous as I have a set of Cardone remans that I decided to put new seals in but now I am not sure if I want to bother running them.

Is there a source I/we can trust? Legitimate question.

Thanks.

I did some rockauto part number searching just out of curiosity. This doesn't change anything, just more or less sharing info for the sake of knowledge.

The pad bracket for the Taurus calipers looks like the GT/V6 bracket, but the part numbers are off by a digit or so, so there is likely a slight difference. My guess it's mounting bolt size I would imagine.

Same with pads. Same shape as the SN95 pad, but a different part number than Cobra and GT, so I am guessing the difference is thickness. However both the V6/GT rotor and taurus rotor are the same 0.550" thickness.

Given that the vast majority of folks are doing this with Cobra 11.65" brakes, just stick with Cobra stuff for everything other than the caliper body. If you need Cobra caliper brackets/abutments, use the Cardone 141042 bracket.
I did see the one about the Ebrake. My car actually does not have the ebrake hooked up at the moment. (cables dont feel like working with me) so that wasnt a concern and its mainly a cruiser so will never see track abuse. However something to keep an eye on.

Unknown. You can't even go junkyard hopping because who wants to put a 30 year old set of calipers on their car, even if they buy the kit to rebuild them yourself.

Not even sure how widespread this is. But it's worth mentioning and letting people know that some are having issues. The failure rate could actually be pretty low, but all it takes are a few failures to instill fear.

I did not get the story of the guy who locked up on track directly. That story was told second hand so not sure the details. Not sure if it was sudden, or the brake was dragging and just heated up to the point it seized.

But another guy directly reported this past weekend he set his parking brake and it never released and he ended up wiping out an expensive rear rotor because of the caliper dragging and building heat. For the vast majority of street cars, that's probably the biggest risk to you.

I have had a set of 43mm Cardone reman calipers on the back for about 2 years now, albeit with very little mileage. I had one start leaking just short of a year after install which I had replaced. No additional issues yet, knock on wood.

Yeah, I follow that as well. I personally know the guy who's car locked up on track and if it weren't for a good roll bar, he might not be here to tell the tale. I am in track prep for a few weeks away. I plan to pull the rear calipers and inspect. Also, I plan to turn them back in. I try not to use the parking brake on the car because it only sees maybe 1000 miles of street duty a year.

That is absolutely insane!

What company remaned the caliper?

Honestly I am not sure if it matters though as they are all probably getting them from the same place.

Was is a Cardone brand reman?

Looking at Rockauto, there are a few other sources. Centric, FVP, Nugeon, Reybestos, and it looks like there are motorcraft options as well.

Motorcraft BRC356RM and BRC15RM which are oddly both left calipers. However they are the most expensive. All remans.

I believe so. I also have Cardone on mine and know of another guy who races his with Cardone on his as well. With the track pads that we use, it didn't make sense to buy loaded calipers anyway. Mine is still streetable, so once I am done with my pre track check list, I will drive it for a bit.

Guess I spoke to soon on my last post. Jacked the rear of the car up and there was a puddle of brake fluid under the passenger rear tire. Leaking from the piston again. Warranty period for the rock auto caliper only applies to the original purchase not the replacement. Guess I'm going to try my luck at one of the local parts stores with a lifetime warranty. At least if it happens again I don't have to worry about shipping to get a replacement.

SO how are folks finding the balance with the ATS and 43mm on track? I'm curious if it is showing to be a well-balanced brake setup, of it it still seems a bit nose-heavy or too rear-biased?

I never did the ATS/43's so my parts still sit on the shelf, but was wondering about real world racing now that folks have been using it for several years...other than this potential rear caliper issue.

Does anyone race the ATS setup on track with standard 38mm calipers?

I don't race but have multiple HPDE weekends, feels very confident and have had instructors say the braking feels great from the passenger seat. To me it feels about as balanced as the stock setup. I'm not the fastest so take that for what it's worth. I know of one person who did the swap then changed to the Taurus rears and he said it was better, he's since sold the car and is in a full race car. The big scare is what happens at track speeds if the caliper does fail. I'm still rolling the dice though.

So guys question. Maybe I missed something in the pages. Ordered the brake lines listed and even what my buddy recommended. The hard line doesn't fit into the new soft lines. Am I missing something?

Not trying to insult you but you do know they are side specific because the fittings are different sizes right?

I only mention it because I've had to tell someone else once before back when the 13 inch front brakes were popular on GTs ages ago.
