While that story is funny, it isn't truly how the "act" of flipping the bird began. There's references going back a lot farther than 1415 and its use can be found in ancient Greek comedy. The Latin phrase for the middle finger is "digitus impudicus" meaning "shameless, indecent or offensive finger".
