Yes they said France lost 2 generations of knights after that battle with the horrendous losses they suffered due to said longbow men.
While that story is funny, it isn't truly how the "act" of flipping the bird began. There's references going back a lot farther than 1415 and its use can be found in ancient Greek comedy. The Latin phrase for the middle finger is "digitus impudicus" meaning "shameless, indecent or offensive finger".

Who would have known.
In the Middle East, they use that finger, to clean the clay off their rose bud.
