my first (and still current) car is a 1994 honda accord stick shift. I'd recomend it 100%, we got mine for 2000 dollars from a friend and it only has 90k miles on it. great little car, reliable, and pretty safe.
oh but if theres steep hilly roads where you live get an automatic. not only is he probably inexperienced with cars but hes probably going to have to learn stick and its a bitch on hills. hard to get used to.

I had a 97 mustang v6 for my first car. It was cheap and extremely reliable and really got me into mustangs. With the v6 theyre not fast enough to really get into trouble but you can still have fun with it, not to mention high school girls love the mustang, they don't know it's not a V8. So I would say a 96 and up v6 mustang.

I recommend a Police Ford Crown Victoria because it is cheap, safe and reliable. For a small car, 1998 or later Ford Escorts have rock solid reliability.
for once, I'm gonna have to agree with you...the cool factor of an ex cop-cruiser for a highschool kid would be aweseom (keep in mind I'm fresh out of high school)

:rollseyes

I would have hated to have a crown vic when I was in or had just gotten out of high school. Probably has to be the worst car ever for a kid that is into cars.

Ranger:
1. Sit taller, see further.
2. If you get hit, you sit higher, not low to ground small car.
3. If you hit something small, you replace bumper, not front clip.
4. If you get into accident, replace fender on full frame truck (not unibody).
5. 2 seater, or maybe with jump seats, barely 3. Cannot pack a bunch of yahoos in the truck, so you wont be driving your buddies to a party.
6. 4-cyl = great gas mileaage, I used to get 28mpg city to work.
7. Not an Accord!
8. Can be used by family as parts chaser, or Home Depot getter...

Yes, been thinking about this, and my 15-1/2 son, is soon getting.... a Ranger!

A Saturn SL or SC (Z body with 1.9 liter I4). Crash tests are outstanding. Dependability is great. If he ever scrapes the entire side of it with the door jamb of your garage, just go to a junk yard, and buy those body panels in the color that matches his car. I replaced all of the right hand side panels (door skins, fender, and quarter) of my sister's car for $400, and it took me less than 8 hours. You cannot tell any damage was done.

Well...if you want incredibly safe and reliable...any kind of Volvo will do that...an 850 or something like that. Decent gas mileage...and its an indestructible tank.

Then again, im biased b/c I drive a Volvo. Nice car though.
