Agree with shotgun if purely for home defense. I’ll also add that you want a short barrel / short stock with a tactical light and ghost ring peep sights (tritium front sight post).

Why does one need a gun safe? I understand if you have kids but I live alone.
Wait 5 years and then ask the question again.

Actually I won't do that to you. I say that because every single person in your position, myself included, thought you might like a little something for the home or the range etc. Up until about 10 years ago, all I had was a few hand me downs, .22 rifle and pistol, crack barrel shotgun. Fast forward and I've had a safe crammed full of rifles and pistols. Unfortunately, all my firearms were lost in a tragic boating accident.

Highly recommend a safe if:

1. You’re planning to “invest and collect” firearms

2. You intend to have any valuable firearms

3. You plan to get a short barrel rifle / shotgun or a suppressor

If you just have a few pistols / rifles, it’s tough to justify the investment.

I would post a pic of my gun but don't own one. Never held or fired one. I'm looking to purchase for home protection though. Thoughts on what to get? Shotgun? Revolver or automatic?
All of the above is the only correct answer. :)

Really though try some at the range. Buy what you shoot well (first priority) and like (second priority). Then get proficient with it. After that expand the firearm collection, if you so choose.

Unless you want a good all around handgun. Then this is solid advice.
Purely for home protection? Shotgun no question.

Want something for home protection that you can also carry and have fun with at the range? Glock 17/19 or Sig 226/229. These are like ford and chevy, guys that shoot glocks think they are best while guys that shoot sigs like them best. Of course they are both wrong since 1911s are best.

I would avoid revolvers. They have their place but are a poor choice for defense and are tougher to shoot well than autos IMO.
Definitely dont listen to the "no question" part of this. There are many questions for what could work best for your home defense situation. Personally, I have never been a fan of shotguns for HD especially in apartment type dwellings. They are a reasonable choice though, in general.

Dont listen to these amateurs. You dont need a safe.

Make yourself a gun room! Lol

But seriously having your firearm/s locked away when you're not in possession of it is generally a good idea. I dont have kids either but my attic area is now a gun room. Reinforced door frame and solid door. Dead bolted to keep undesirables out. Solely for theft deterrence though.

Shooting can be addictive. Buying guns to try out can feed that addiction. Hell, I bought my last gun 5 guns ago lol.

Handgun, Semi-automatic

Go to the range and rent several. Which ever feels the best in your price range is the one you buy. Forget the brand X is the best.

In the gun community we have nuianced discussions about what makes something great that are generally BS. The truth is for home defense if it goes bang and the round is on target, it a great gun.

Also get a handgun safe and mount to the studs in the wall somewhere no one will notice would suck if your gun was stolen and used to kill someone. I prefer electronic keypads for quick access.

Then get training and range time.

Agree With the Glock or Sig choices. Always poked fun at Glocks until I shot one. Bought one (19) and its just a great gun. I carry it when the block is hot. Otherwise, I carry a Sig P365 every day.

If on a tighter budget , check out the Canik's. Insanely positive reviews.

Just put some (more) new shoes on dad's Colt to gift one of the boys at graduation in a couple of months. Reblued the kydex scuffs in the slide from running it in a few matches last year. I think the boy will like it.

Thanks. He said he was going to tuck it away and not shoot it, to which I replied, "PFFFT. It ain't no collector grade 1911! It just a pretty pistol that I fixed up that belonged to your granddad with the same name."

I had the slide dovetail cut by Novaks to replace the GI sights, and I cut the frame tangs myself to fit a Wilson upswept beavertail, replacing the old duckbill grip safety. Also has a Wilson thumb safety I fit, and a S&A magwell I installed.

I told him to plan to shoot the snot out of it.

He's driving up from school to shoot a match with me tomorrow. He asked if I'd have this pistol with me. I said, "Nope, when you graduate in May you get it."

That is super cool. When you are gone you will still be with him everytime he shoots it.

Thanks. The sentimental value is higher than the street value for sure. I think I spent $600 in Wilson parts and Novaks services with sights, plus whatever time I have in it which is probably about what a rattly Colt of this era is worth. In fact that's exactly what dad paid for it new 25 years ago. I have the receipt.

I wish that I had just one of my grandfather's guns. I don't even own a photo of either grandfather. My dad sold everything of value he owned due to addiction.

I'm a sentimental person, and I tend to place value on things in regard to those I love and respect. The memories provided by the things I have mean a lot more to me than they would to others.
